Sure, go ahead.
There's a lot of hype and bull over Ducati reliability and maintenance costs. Back in the bad old days of the 80's and 90's ducati's build and reliability was shocking and servicing was mafiosa style extorsion!Originally Posted by JackieD
In the last ten years this has altered racically. A few people I know have new ducatis and have reported no issues with reliability (execpt a neutral light fault - was fixed very quickly) and that servicing costs are on par with the japanese manufacturers. They have also commented on the quality of the service recieved. The only issue I am aware of is that the engine need servicing slightly more frequently than japanese engines, but I think this would depend on the type of bike you buy and your annual milage...

No offence, but I think this general reputation is quite outdated. They have a reputation for unreliability - even the brand new ones :/
I have owned my Ducati since March 2009 and it's never broken down on me.
The service intervals are 7500 miles and Lurkalots Honda is 6000 miles.
They have considerably improved the reliability, service intervals and what they do on each service (hence reduced the costs).
Unfortunately my experience/opinion of Riders is low although there is an excellent Ducati specialist in Clutton (can't do warranty work unfortunately).
So in general I think that opinion/reputation is outdated and things have moved on.
However if you are really on a tight budget then you might need to look at it more closely than I have.
If anyone has any questions on the 696 or wants to sit on it, then let me know.
It's certainly a good choice to look at for shorter/smaller people.
