Just listening to an old WW2 RAF pilot (Tony Pickering) on radio 2 [smiley=thumbup.gif]

My uncle was a WW2 pilot in Hurricanes and Lancasters.

Love the sound of those Merlin engines

Goota agree with that, Battle of Britain flight and display from Spitfire and Hurricane at recent Bournemouth air festival was absolutely fantastic to watch and listen too - lump to the throat time

Dunno it was a local one as he used to fly back over trogtown from bombing runs and cut his engines to let my Gran and Gramp know he was ok, they were living in the Stallards at the time.
He's buried in Hilperton grave yard at the back on the left hand side in front of the hedge

Great short film that, though I find myself confused.

Can anyone explain how they ended up over the Republic of Ireland?

The Spitfire started off engaging a German bomber wing that still had fighter escort which suggests they were most likely near London or over Kent.

The German BF109 barely had the range to escort the bombers to their targets and had mere minutes of fuel to spare to dogfight with RAF aircraft coming to intercept. Likewise the Spitfire was relatively short ranged and having engaged the enemy bombers and then chased this German pilot, surely he could not have made it from Kent/London to ROI?

Or am I just reading too much into this? I do have a degree in military history...

    Edit: Typo

Bristol was heavily bombed, as was Coventry, and with a top speed of 330mph it wouldn't take long to get to the republics airspace from either citys. As it says at the end of the film , over 200 Allied and German forces were detained during the duration of the war.
    Nice find there Swanny
