I'd love to but i'd end up buying it if i did and given that I haven't passed my test yet, i'd be mad :o lol I can't ride it back, even if I had as I need it restricting.
My ex husband tells me it's old fashioned and he'd go for the SV650 because it's sexier. Cheeky git ;D
Meh, tbh they're both good choices with proven track records for newbies like us!
I guess it's just style preference, I really like the old-school look of the GS! (sexy or not ;D)
Regarding the restriction thing, the owner of the bike might be kind and ride it to your house for you if it's not too far away?
i'd pretty much decided on the GS500...then I saw this...

and then.. this..

Aggghh!
I'd go with the SV. It is a great bike and should you enjoy it that much most of the performance kit from the thou' fit very nicely onto it.
The GS is great for a first big bike, I had one for 3 years but was always frustrated by the lack of extra kit. Huggers were rare and were a crazy price when I had mine.
Hmm that red SV's really nice! :o
It's sold :'(Quote:

The blue one is still there, course starts Sunday so I'm gonna hang on til I pass. Still looking though, Budget Bikes in Swindon have a couple too :D
Been riding my restricted 650 Bandit for 6 months after doing the restricted test on a 125cc. Now my boyfriend has got the bug and is doing the full test and he's getting a unrestricted bike. So now even though I've been plugging away for years riding 125cc bikes Im gonna be following him cos I wont have the power! Now I have to wait 18months before I can take the damn restricter off(legally). Oh why didnt I do the test on the 500cc...
I did my DAS test on a CB500 then bought a 600 Bandit - I found the Bandit heavy in comparison even after having it lowered and I struggled a bit with it. Now I am on a lighter Triumph which has made a very big difference. So I would consider the weight of the bike as really important as well as all the other great tips you have been given.
Also......I wonder why the training on a bigger bike is so much more expensive - the test fees are the same. I would have thought most trainers have overall bike policies so insurance, or petrol would not be so much more??
Good luck with the search :)
I did my test in November, and am riding a cagiva canyon 500, 33bhp as standard, Challenging to find replacemt parts.
Good luck.

Oh, I wouldn't buy one from there, just wanted to sit on their stock lol ;D ....which is exactly what I did. Jeeeez, they are heavy. :o There isn't a great deal of difference in the height of the GS500 & SV650 - i'm on tip toes with both but I sat on a naked SV and a sports SV and sheeeeet, I really noticed the sports position and the bike felt so much heavier.
Sat on a GS & SV in Oxford too and they felt a little lower.
Probably worth checking if the ones you are looking (that seem a bit too high) can be lowered. I think for most bikes it is fairly simple! I am sure they will be able to tell you at the shop you are looking in - you might be able to negotiate lowering as a freebie!!
Yes, I have checked and the are both easy to lower. Anything up to 35mm :D
Beware that lowing a naked sv is hard as the bars go over the top of the forks. This isn't an issue on a S as these have clip on style bars.
thanks Jon. My course with Mark starts tomorrow. Eeek!
Good luck tomorrow.
Cheers, had a fab day today :D fingers crossed for next weeks Mod1 test :o
You're in good hands with Mark.Quote:

Sounds obvious, but make sure, if you do lower it, do both ends! .. I've seen so many where they only lower the back (usually by swapping the suspension dogbones for longer ones) and leave the front - you'll end up doing strange things to the handling that way..Quote:

I know where there's a 600cc Bandit for sale in Box - if it's still there.
£1400,and although it is a Cat D repaired, the owner has been riding for about 3 years since, and it looks straight and tidy.
OOoh cheers Loops, but looking for a Hornet rather than a Bandit tbh, do you know if Hornets take restriction okay? Also, I'm wondering if they can be lowered too? Any idea? My ex husband had a Hornet but I only ever rode pillion back on those days. Never bloody sat on it on my own, Doh! ::)
I have no idea, but my 600 CBR has coped with his restriction and I think they are very similar (if not the same) engines, just different tuning levels.
You'll be going up and down the gears more to keep in your power band, and have to face being left in the dust if anyone on an unrestricted bike decides to give theirs the beans (Mikey can take off and leave me like I'm standing still when we're out ;D). But lets face it, you're always gonne have that with only 33bhp!
thanks Loops, Im eagerly awaiting the arrival of my Ladystars and I'll test them out on a Hornet asap. ;D
If Carlsberg made boots...... ;)Quote:
