Who remembers their first big bike
mine was this, A brand new 1979 kawasaki Z250 Scorpion i think it cost something like £2/3 grand a fortune for a 17 year old lol.
For those that remember the "250" learner law, a 250 was the biggest bike you could ride with a provisional licence it was also a time that Norwich Union ruled the motorcycle insurance world with their "Rider Policy", you could ride any bike whether you owned it or not with no loss of cover upto your stated engine size.

I remember the 250 learner law and just missed out on getting a 250, i was gutted after seeing so many others on RD250 and Suzuki X7's with microns fitted.....ahh the smell of the 2 stroke engine.
I had to settle for a DT125 which was like the one below.

I didn't take my test until I was 27 so learned on a Honda CG125.
Went straight from that to a 1969 Triumph T100, 500cc twin and I've still got her.

I went directly from Swindon test center where I passed to dynamite performance bikes in Bournemouth to collect my Kawasaki ZR7 750cc that I’d brought and paid for the day before. Yes I was confident on passing and no I don’t no what I’d have done if I hadn’t passed as I couldn’t have collected the bike and they don’t give refunds :o.

I went from a Kawasaki eliminator little 125 to the ‘sensible’ big bike Suzuki GS500 which was quick round town and light and fun on a-roads but a bit gutless on the motorway. The Kawasaki zr7 I got after felt like a proper big bike and I could get it in the same blue as my old eliminator and it boomed along. Very satisfying.

Passed test on a 2 Stroke 250 then inherited brother's 88.
He put my bike in part-exchange for his next bike, a big Enfield.

Strange to realise that it was only 30 hp, but it would try to do the 'ton'.

Kawasaki AR125LC was the first bike until I pass the test, so the bike I 'upgraded' too was a Suzuki GS250T Custom - but, it was cursed - rear ended at a set of traffic lights on it, and later on I fell off the thing in a big way up on the Sussex Downs. Gave it a rest when I went off to Uni, but ended up with a Suzuki GSX550E at the start of my 2nd year which I class as my first proper big bike.

First big bike was a DT175MX followed by a RG250 gamma Pepsi. After that it was a Suzuki GSX750F. Favourite bike was my old Speed Triple, really miss that bike :(

I’ll take “big bike” to mean first one bigger than a moped... mine was a Suzuki GT250M that I bought just after turning 17 and selling my Fizzie (which I sold for £100, I’d be looking to get around £3k for one of those nowadays, but I had neither the space nor money to hang on to all the bikes that have since rocketed in value, oh well...) Where was I? Oh yes, GT250 on L-plates as we could in those days. I got a lift on the back of my mate Tony’s 400/4 to collect the GT from about 5 miles from home, and got a rear puncture on my inaugural ride home... The M model had Suzuki’s ram air system, designed to speed up air flow over the cylinder heads to aid cooling... all it achieved was making spark plug removal difficult. Had to keep an eye on the ignition timing as the points had a habit of slowly advancing, resulting in a holed piston, always on the right cylinder...
