For those with video cameras what software are you using for editing?

I'd like to find something really simple to use.

I cant get Windows Moviemaker to work on my PC - I get an error message about my video card

Thanks

It depends what you want to do. I really only need two basic functions, cut and splice. After recording a load of footage, I want to cut out the good bits and then sticth them together. I use two freeware programes for this which are both very easy to use.

Cutting
Free Video Cutter http://www.freevideocutter.com/
Watch video and note down time for start of cut and end of cut
Open free video cutter and open file that you want to cut
enter start time and end times for cut
enter name for cut video or leave the default
click start
If you want more than one cut from the video repeat the above process as many times as you like making sure you use different names for each cut

Splicing
Free Video Joiner http://www.freevideojoiner.com/
Select the files you want to join together
Change the order if they are not in the order you want
Select the file type you want to output
Click join

Here is a sample. I cut the footage from several files and joined them into one

I was going to say moviemaker for its simplicity then read the last sentence!

What is the actual error? I had to disable virtu MVP with mine as that caused an error for moviemaker (along with errors in many other things).

I get an error message as soon as I click to open it which says 'Windows Movie Maker cannot start because your video card does not support the required level of hardware acceleration or hardware acceleration is not availiable'

I've tried updating my graphics card driver but other than that I think its beyond my IT capabilities.

I'm a mac user at home, so using iMovie - but have to convert the .mov files to mp4 first using Handbrake

Without knowing more I'd guess your card (or onboard) is pretty old the only GPU hardware requirement is to support DX9.

You can check by doing this

To open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool in Windows 7, click the Start button, type dxdiag in the search box, and then, in the list of results, click dxdiag. Click the Display tab, and then look at the value for DDI Version.

Thank you very much.

It should run moviemaker then. Do you have the other things it needs installed? Off the top of my head media player and photo gallery.

I use adobe premiere, however if you have issues with your graphics card on moviemaker I don't think this would run either.

James, on imovie if you encode the video in m4v format you can just change the filetype to mp4 as the container is the same. Saves reencoding it, failing that as far as I know YouTube should support mov files anyway which would save it been converted twice (once to mp4 and another time when YouTube encodes it again)

it's imovie that won't import the .mov mate, so it's having to be re-encoded before I can edit it :/ After that it's all ok

I have a work PC and couldnt download moviemaker until I convinced IT it was for work purposes, I tried the other windows apps and couldn't get along with any.

I think its definitely worthwhile trying to get moviemaker to download and sorting the error message, then crop the videos, send them to your phone via email, the edit them in imovie - but thats assuming you have an iphone.

At last I have Windows Moviemaker :D spent ages messing about checking various things and after running some updates I tried it and was able to open it.

Wouldnt have bothered had it not been for WR6133 as I just thought my video cards were the problem so big thanks again for all the help.

If your having trouble with Edit software - use something like MPEG Streamclip www.squared5.com to transcode your footage into a more manageable format for any editing software. I use Final Cut X. Or PC based is Premier pro, I know Premier Pro doesn't like H.264 encoding which DSLRS and some Helmet cams record to, so I transcode using MPEG Streamclip. Hope that helps. If you want your stuff to look extra special, experiment with something like Magic Bullet looks...
