View Full Version : Welding a Big hole in a pipe

Long Story short some ****ebags vandalised one of my bikes.

Main damage was to the exhausts. One muffler torn off which I can deal with as I was planning to put aftermarkets on. The bigger issue is they tore an EGR valve off the top of one of the pipes. It's left a fairly big hole in the pipe, now the bike is fine without the EGR's they are just there to get it through Euro emission laws but I'm wondering if the hole can be patched/welded over as the value of the bike means buying new pipes is not really economical.

Any advice appreciated as my local garage while does welding gives generally ****e advice in the pursuit of making money so I want to be sure patching over it is actually a good idea before I ask em to do it. If anyone versed in welding stuff could estimate the time it would take too that would be very handy so I don't get bent over on price.

The hole is shown in the photos

easiest fix if you can still get the is old fashioned pot/pan repairs, rubber washers go either side and screw does up and clamp. you could end washer over to strengthen. otherwise easy enough to braze or tig a plate over £20 max

Thanks the plate option sounds best and I guess I'd have to remove the EGR from the other pipe and have that done too. Any recommendations on a place (I can travel within reason)? My local garage is a bit crap/cowboy.

I'd literally just finished all the work to get this bike MOT'd and on the road so some little scroat doing this has really pissed me off.

bridge garage shrewton? usually have a few bikes outside .cant you find a cheap exhaust on ebay? what bike?

in the old days I would have suggested Fluff Brown at Goodworth clatford. shame he died last year , now the business are concentrating on Chinese AJS bikes

It's a Jinlun 250-5 (Chinese). If I chopped the muffler off and fitted a universal a Jinlun 125-11 pipe should fit but the ones I've seen on E-bay are rough. I have to be stingy as I have a budget of next to nothing and as I bought this bike for not much more than pocket lint I don't want to spend much anyway (brand new OEM pipe with muffler is a tad over £100). I bought it as a non runner in November and before this happened was just ready to get it MOT'd having more or less taken it down to nuts and bolts and rebuilt it.

shame, i gave away a 250-5 jinlun last week; the exhausts were in great condition too.

I can weld a patch over it easily... if you can get it to me, its an easy repair... especially now the pipe is off the bike.. mates rates apply... 2 litre bottle of strongbow should do it!

Toph did a brilliant job on one of my previous bikes, an old VTR1000, welding the exhaust for me a couple of years ago.

Thanks to Toph's handiwork with the pipes I got the cans on today.

Excuse the crappiness of the video I had just burned my hand. It sounds rough as I need to set the carbs properly. (if video doesn't stream you may need to click it then select open)
