View Full Version : Poor MPG
Currently getting 100 miles from a full tank which is under half i had from my first bike, i know BHP is higher and i'm more twist happy but is there anything i could check to improve this? Thanks

What size is the tank? What does that relate to in mpg?
Havent worked it out for a while but think i get 42 mpg on my 1000.
16 litres which is 1 less than my old bike. No idea what it converts at

3.5 gallons so 100 miles is about 28 MPG....... you riding a Sherman tank?
Air filter could be worth a check, if its well clogged up it could be running rich.

whats the difference in tank size? my old cbr1000 would get to Mallory from chip and back to earl shilton without hitting reserve. the fireblade that followed started to hiccup at the slip road to ES on the way up. or another way, to pembrey and back to the M4 services at Magor and the blade had to stop at Burry Port/ Pembrey.
you should be looking around 40-50 on a bike, but then todays fuel isn't as good as earlier.
Depends on the throttle useage, I get 180 to reserve on a general run, but 130 if its a little nimble.

Are your brakes binding sprocket sizes choke chain may all have a effect carb could need cleaning bowl could be sticking overflowing or even piston rings could need replaced tyre tread psi or valve timing. don't know bike but if there's a belt for aluternator or water pump need ajusting loser. wheel bearings shocks and balanced carb spark plug need new one or just loss weight drink your case of beer befor you get there:confused:
If anything WR it would be a Challenger not a sherman....cheers Wes, i'll check the filter & Birdy its EFI
I've had 250 miles from 20lt tank before
Normally does 60mpg unless I take it steady

When was the last time you had your carbs balanced?

When did you last have the carbs balanced ?

Never......cause its EFI
it's still needs balancing though - the throttle bodies need to be balanced, just like the butterflies on carbs.
Both butterflys open sync'd guessing thats balanced right ?
Before doing any work to the bike, start from first principles and determine the actual fuel consumption ie fill the tank, then the next time you fill up record miles travelled and the amount of fuel needed to refill. Then it's a simple calculation of miles divided by fuel (litres) equals miles per litre and then multiply that figure by 4.54 to arrive at miles per gallon. Once you know the mpg, then you can decide if it is lower than you expect and if you need to investigate doing any work to the bike.

I doubt very much you could see the synch like this - it is possible to synch statically with feeler gauges but it's done rarely. The synch adjusts the amount of butterfly opening (or air bypass) when the throttle is closed. Since the engine is pulling against this very obstructed intake, it creates the vacuum and by matching these you ensure the butterflies are synchronised.
In my experience on EFI bikes, bad economy is often down to worn plugs or iffy ignition - injection is pretty bombproof, however it is prudent to keep the throttle bodies synchronised and it needs to be done as part of a normal service schedule.
