View Full Version : Chippenham noob & bike virgin
Hello all,
just passed my CBT on Sunday with http://www.ablemotorcycletraining.co.uk/index.html and am wondering what to do next.
Do I pass my test on a 125 and stay restricted for 2 years or do DSA? I'm a skint student so cost is obviously a factor - I also realise I could buy a bigger bike that's been restricted to 33bhp.
I have no idea where to start as I'm a complete bike virgin.
HELP! :D
Hello Goldie and welcome along...I've been expecting you. ;)
Say hello to Tina everyone. A young lady i've known for 20 years or so. Be nice to her you hooligans!
;D
I did my test 2 years ago....DAS and never looked back, go for it!

Hi Paul - cheers, I'm sorely tempted but I'd probably have to sell a kidney ;D
Hi There and welcome from one Tina to another hehe
I did my MOD 1 + 2 on my 125 and am restricted for 2 years.
Can't say Im complaining and I wouldnt have done it any other way lol....mainly 'cos Im rather short and didnt have the confidence on a 500......but that is what I have now and I love it (it had to be lowered tho)
It did work out cheaper to do it on my own bike obviously and I was really happy doing it on a bike I felt comfortable with.
Whatever you choose good luck and fingers crossed :) :) :) :)
Hello and welcome, you will love it here, they are a great bunch.

Hello and welcome :) Go for the DAS, you won't regret it!! :)
Welcome Tina :)
I'm another who did the restricted licence, purely because I had my own 125cc already for work that I could also use for my lessons and test. I paid a lower rate for each lesson, could practice to my hearts content any time I liked, and could also take myself to tests without having to be escorted.
It does get frustrating at times not being able to give full rein to the CBR, but as at the time I didn't have much funds, it got me my full licence 8-)
go for the das. the 500s ent all that powerfull at least not so much that it will scare you. then have what ever bike you like. being on a budget wont the das save your insurance tokens if you go for a small bike after, that leaves more beer tokens.
oh and welcome!
Not sure, I assumed having 2 years insurance on a lower cc bike would be better than none on a, say, 600cc? :-? I dunno, I'm new to all this ;D
thanks for the warm welcome everyone :)
Hi and welcome to WB 8-)
You could have a play on an insurance comparison website and see if it makes a difference

Hi and welcome,
2 yrs experience is worth its weight in gold Hun ;)
I did a restricted licence, albeit 11 odd yrs ago now, due to lack of funds and it made a huge difference to my premium having 2 yrs bonus when i got my first 600cc bike :o
oh, you lot, so confusing!
You know, I'm probably going to go with the restricted bike, I'm just too skint and am in no real rush to get a monster bike just yet, I guess. I'd sooner have a bike I feel confident on rather than a bike I feel out of my depth with, because that'll either put me off riding or it'll get me killed, right? :-?
cheers everyone ;)
Hiya you can be the only one to decide, wots right for some may not be the right way for you ,if you are very new to motorcycling ,IE not been on a 50 then 125 to gain the experiance from them i then do the 2 year restricted ,if you are a confident rider with some know how ,then do your direct , but above all do wot you want. ;)

Hello & Welcome!
DAS all the way - Go for it!
Hi Goldie and welcome to WB
I did the CBT years ago bought a 125 and spent 6 months riding around on that then did direct access on a GS500 passed and got myself a 600 theres a lot to be said for the 6 months experience i gained on the 125 A friend of mine did DA passed and got herself straight onto a ZX6R without any experience on smaller bikes its really put her off !
Cheers A
cheers people ;)
I'm looking at a bike tomorrow, it's a 125, I'm gonna stick with it for a bit, get some experience and see how I go.
Thanks again for all the advice and the warm welcome ;)

Hi and welcome to WB
Hi and welcome to WB :] 125s are epic win despite what people say :D especially the smokey kind! But being a student engines rebuilds may be a problem ;[ quite costly!
hello and welcome

Can you ask Mark to let you have a go on the 500, you'll see the difference between that and the 125 is enormous :)
I did my DAS and have a 600, a bit like Tina (Beamber) I've had bike lowered as I'm a shortarse.
One thing my instructor said to me was it's you that twists the throttle, so tbh you could get on any bike and it's you that controls the speed of the thing, so far touch wood, I've never felt uncomfortable on my bike, my only wish is that it wasn't so heavy.

Welcome to WB's.. :)
Well, today, I bought a bike!
not like me to hang around so I did a bit of research and found an 11 month old Yammy YBR125 with THREE, yes, 3!!!! miles on the clock up for a bargain price so I grabbed it.
Getting the insurance sorted in the am as it's already sitting in my garage, good to go. :D :D
ps - the numberplate made me smile ... ;D

hello :-) why not do the DAS, then make up your mind, a 125 will keep the costs down, and to get your no claims in for a year.
the 125 will be good enough in most instances to keep up with the traffic, and they seem to keep the same value year after year...
do the DAS and then you can decide what you want to do...
have fun :-)
cheers Jaydee - I bought a 125, gonna just see how I get on with it for a few weeks before booking my test. ;)

good plan, 125's are cheap to run, will give you a good idea of if you like biking, youll already have bought all the kit, 125's are also good for thrashing! (and for keeping your license!)hahaha....
booking the test now is a good idea, it will only ever get more expensive and harder to do! blow the money whilst you have the bug! :-)
