The mighty GS has taken to running like a sack of poo.

Isn't picking up very well, the plugs are one black and one white + it smells of fuel. I'm running Pro FST fuel addative in order to counter carb icing which these are famous for in this weather.

It took to pissing fuel out of the overflow during the summer, but a bit of carb cleaner seemend to cure that.... and havent had any issues, till now.

Am thinking I have a sticking float in one carb, anyone got any other ideas or tips for getting the carbs off.....

You could show them carb porn, and stroke them in their special place?

If your tank is rusting and you don't have a fuel filter it could be the float needle isn't closing properly even if the float is working.

could it be that the carbs need balancing?

If the carb porn doesn't work, try slackening the clamp rings on the inlet manifold rubbers and on the hose trumpets from the airbox, spray plenty of WD40 on both ends (front & rear of the carbs) and have a look to see if there's a mounting bolt or two for the airbox that you can undo so it'll move back and pull off the back of the carbs. Make it as easy as possible for yourself by going through things logically to get the things off.

Then, when you've run out of ideas, get a manual.... ;)

Cheers Scotty. I have a haynes, and its as much use as a porn mag for telling me how to get the carb out of that bike.

Am going to attack it tonight.....

Drain the carbs. We found that when the carbs thawed, it allowed water into the bowls. You may well find water coming out with the fuel. Once you've done it once, you shouldn't have anymore problems if you continue running Pro FST. Carb icing is the main issue. :(

Hitting the carbs with a stick (Basil Fawlty style) could cure a sticking float... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Cheers Mark.

Tried both, but to no avail.

Have put a new tank of fuel in and It seems better now... wierd?? Will have to look at the carbs when it's warmer....

You could have some dirty fuel? Had a real issue with that on my old car. Teach me for thinking I was getting a better deal by buying cheaper at Tesco!

Well, as an update, It's running ok now. HAve done nothing, bar change the fuel... could of been bad fuel, or the GS being a git!

How long was the fuel on their?? Because modern fuel has a
Life of about 3month, not saying that if it's older than 3month it's useless, just doesn't burn as well and makes thing run poor.. If I remember currectly the sulpher in it evaporates ?

Quick update on that post, fule has a life of up to 6month (in a perfectly sealed tank, opening tank etc will reduce it, as the combustable components are evaporated, see this link http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/557467 :)

About 1 week from full to empty....

For most engines, the fuel can stay in for six months or more and still be perfectly useable... maybe not as good as fresh, but still combustable.
