Fairing Screw Removal

I tried to take my right side main fairing off yesterday as I'm about to do an oil change. The 3 little screws that attach to the nose fairing came out fine, as did the 3 allen bolts that attatch it to the frame. I then realised there was another screw right down at the front that seems to hold right side to left side, but when I tried to undo it, the screw was knackered. Looks like somebody previous had already tried and rounded it off. In the end, I had to undo all the fairing bolts the other side, and try to remove it as 1 big piece, leaving that screw in.

What would be the best way to remove it, so I can replace the screw with a new one? It's a real pain trying to do it like I have, and runs the risk of damaging the fairing when trying to get it off & on.

Sounds like you may have to drill it out. Just go careful as the drill will try to wander into the pastic.

Post a photo of the conjoined bits of fairing that you removed - I can't recall whether that model has a "bellypan" section or whether the two large side panels go right beneath. Whilst it's off, soak the back of the threads with WD40 - can you get a dremel head onto it to cut a slot in so you can use a straight screwdriver on it?

Had a similar problem with a crash mushroom. Had to drill and counter screw it.

Fairing screws and bolts for Japanese bikes are made from a soft metal called cheesium.

If they are an allen key type then drilling should be easier, if they are a hex head then you want a centre punch so you can make a little dent for the drill bit to fit in.

I've just been taught this stuff from an old engineer after going through the same a few times. he said you want to drill as slowly as you can, to fast and the drill won't cut in as it should and the it will just heat up and if it heats up the bolt that area will harden and be harder to drill out.

A normal drill bit will just wind the bolt in tighter as you try to drill it out, this will hopefully loosen it off a tad. ;)

(Remember to switch your drill to anti-clockwise rotation...)

Stop downloading porn, get outside & get a better photo of the orifice where the bolt is rather than enlarging a photo of your bike on a distant hillside. ;)
