I have a front wheel I need the disc mount points machining back 2.5mm on each side, 6 points each disc. Is that something I can just yellow pages for any engineering firm to sort out? I already know me and a grinder will make a hash of!

youll struggle to get this done on a lathe (quick to set up and lower cost to you) as it will require a deep bed depth, not many machine shops will have a lathe that big. (some CNC machines have a verydeep depth but take longer to set up (more cost)
BUT you might get this done on a milling machine! which some engineering firms may have...

shame im not "in the shop" anymore.... :-(

+1 for the mill...

- or you could buy discs with a different offset. ;)
