ok, not happy, fog has killed the electrics i'm freezing cold and miles from home.
pushed to texaco garage, bought fuses fiddled around in dark to replace only to discover there's spare fuses built into the main fuse holder! thanks hyo, wish i'd known before the pushing tho. just limped home thru the fog in back roads, only lucky thing is i was 60ft away from M4 slip road and would have been completely bollocksed
biking is a STEEEEEEEP learning curve

Good point Al, your fault for upsetting my bike :D then again Dennis did sit on it earlier so maybe it was that after all :P

Any ideas on best way to protect the electrics from the damp/wet? I seem to have a fair bit exposed under the tank :-[

glad your ok dude...............the road went dark on me once a303 about 11.30pm....whole bike died.

drifted over to side trying to figure out what was wrong, my tank bag had slipped up and turned the key off ;D

Glad you got home, don't forget to replace the spare fuse.

Is worrying that the fuse went, the damp shouldn't have that bigger effect. Coupled with the dim lights, I'd be a little suspicious.

I used to be a Bandit fan, they are so weak in this area, arcing and carb icing in fog and wet weather, in the end i got sick of breaking down and went the full faired route. There seemed to be sod all really you could do to protect the HT leads in the wet, not sure apart from mastic maybe around the fuse box holes/routes in?

You could try this stuff

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_18 7211_langId_-1_categoryId_255221

I used to use it on my RS125 which didn't like starting on cold, foggy & damp mornings...

its possible you have a wiring fault, either a bad earth or maybe a wire shorting out on the frame,,would be a nightmare to trace but i have a similar sounding wiring fault on my gpz500 and i still cant find it(engine dies if i switch the lights off!!!)

Had the wiring traced by garage, they say no faults with electrics/earths and may just be the exposed wiring. Time to learn how to lift the tank and cover these up :-/

I'd check the earths and the condition of the battery.

Battery is 5 weeks old and garage said all electrics on bike are solid, gonna lift tank in bit and check earths myself and tape up these wires

Should have waited for me to finish work and tag along with you, then the AA would have sorted it :P

No, seriously, glad you're ok. That's happened to me too many times and it's scary as! Luckily I have my mechanic (AKA my boyfriend ;D) on speed dial, so he tends to help. A LOT!

that's the problem with electrics they can look good but until u get down to the nitty gritty testing for continuity bad earth's resistances etc etc you will never truly know as for the seat check for any wires you dislodged arnt in the way

Joneyflame the bike guru, fixed my bike!

Top man thanks [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Broken wires on headlights rewired and discovered front end was loose due to crappy bolts! Stripped and rebolted 4 hrs later and feels like a brand new ride....oh and he reseated tank too, took all of 5 secs to sort that :-[ have pics of it stripped bare if anyones interested? https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?id=704192798&tid=345623961212&frecId=false&skipCl ustering=true&qn=1332195687&success=12&failure=0&s et=oa.10150586881311213
