View Full Version : what to do..33bhp

I have searched, can't find a thread like this so I'm after some advice.
I passed my CBT last year and currently have a YBR125. I'm booked in to do my restricted test with Mark Able at the end of the month and am now considering options re restricted licences.
I'm 5ft 4, 40 years old and female, I'm tempted to go to a restricted 400, for instance, so I get used to the weight without having the power as I'm conscious that the YBR is a bit choked sometimes but I'm also aware of the weight issue - part of the reason I'm doing the restricted licence and not the DAS.
Obviously, I know it's possible to restrict anything but it's also important to be sensible - it's pointless restricting anything too big & there is always the option of getting an unrestricted 33bhp bike. :-/

Advice please:
1 do i get a 250/400+ cc bike, restricted - if so which
2 do I get a 33bhp unrestricted bike - if so, which

aaaggghhhh!! help please! :-/

Ps, I know someone will suggest I do the DAS & I know someone is bound to say, 'I told you so' after my last thread asking whether to do DAS or A2 :P ;D

Goldie, I'm 5'1" and I was 42 when I did my unrestricted DAS nearly two years ago, for me I didn't see the point if being restricted for 2 years.
My first bike was a Yamaha Diversion, was a great bike when acutally riding along, the problem for me came when trying to get it in and out of my garage, and slow manoeuvres i.e. beginning and end of rides. Bike was way too heavy for me and height didn't help.
I now ride a Monster 696, it's such a light bike and seat height much lower.
From experience, it's good to get peoples thoughts on various bikes, but actually getting on one and riding it is the best thing you can do. Good luck :)

do the DAS, you may as well, effectively its the same test! would you buy 1 lottery ticket for a fiver if you could get ten????
As for the bike, that really depends on what style you like and how deep your pockets are???

See, I know people told me I wouldnt stay on a 125 for long but I didn't want to struggle with the weight/height thing so decided to stick with it, do my test on my 125 and see how I felt as the restriction ticked away.
Jacde, that's where I'd struggle - I have enough problems getting my YBR in and out of the garage and always reverse paddle it ;D

I don't ride my bike daily, in fact, I can go a fortnight without riding it sometimes (kids, life, etc gets in the way and I'm a fair weather rider lol) so the 2 years doesn't seem a problem for me.
Newnut - money is tight - i'm a poor student with 3 kids that eat their own bodyweight in food daily. ;D
the difference in price is £300 ish, not quite the same as another 5 lotto tickets :-/ is it really, essentially the same test? :o
I was also considering insurance too - atm it's not too bad on a 125, after 2 more years, i'll have built up NCB :-?

newnut
10-04-12, 01:25 PM
my bad, i forgot it cost more. it is the same test though, just on a bigger bike.
Insurance isn't too bad on bikes especially compared to cars. As a new rider, (had to retake test after ban) on my 900cc blade age 31 it was 350 quid, now a year on its 250ish

Jacde
10-04-12, 01:25 PM
With the Diversion I never ever sat on it to get it in and out of the garage :o I always pushed it in/out!
There is no difference in the practical tests at all apart from the bike you choose to do it on and therefore the licence you get once you pass.
Cat A1- An engine capacity not exceeding 125cc
A max power output of 11 kW (14.6 bhp)
Cat A2 - This licence allows you to ride any motorcycle with a power output not exceeding 25 kW (33 bhp) and a power weight ratio not exceeding 0.16 kW / kg for two years.
Cat A - A standard motorcycle licence and can ride any size bike.
The fee is the only difference, the fee, Cat A is slightly more money.

I had a unrestricted 250 then a 33bhp restricted Sv650.

If money is tight I'd go for the 250 option. Chances are you won't need to restict and most 250 will do 60-70mph.

The schools charge less for a 125 test as the bikes cost less to run, but the test itself is exactly the same.

As to bikes, either a Honda CB or CBF250. Lot about, get a 90's or newer one. Cheap too.

For restricted bikes, CB500 has to be my suggestion. Great first bike. HAndles well and not too crippled by the restriction.

Would a restricted Suzuki SV 650 not fit the bill?.

possibly, they look nice and would suit my short-arse-ablity ;D

Goldie, I went for the DAS, But could not manage the bigger bike on all the manoeuvres , so I went for the A1 on my 125, which was way easier, also it gave me a lot more confidence. I am looking at the Hornet as it is one of the lighter bikes and my feet can touch the ground comfortably.

Thanks Lou, that's pretty much what I'm feeling. Fig 8's are a barsteward at the best of times, can't imagine attempting it on a big heavy bike :(

I'm another 5ft 3 ish/ 40 something female and I thinks it's personal preference with bikes, but I really wouldn't instantly dismiss, or be put off by a big bike.

I've been riding on and off since I was 16 and passed my test ages ago now and I've had several big bikes and they arent as hard to handle as some suggest. In fact I think the weight can be an advantage.

One of my favourites was my old 1200 Bandit - yes its heavyish but very well balanced. I also rode my husbands FJR1300 (not my cup of tea at all but fantastic if you like touring)

I've had about 20 odd bikes since I've been riding and one I would suggest taking a look at is a Bandit 600 - you see plenty restricted and they are a nice bike to ride.

I know someone who had a restricted R1 for 2 years and she loved it.

I'd have a potter around some of the bike shops and sit on a few and see how you find them. The great thing about being a short middle aged woman is that most salesmen still dont take you seriously so assume you wont be buying a bike and dont give you any hassle ;) ;D ;D

Goldie
10-04-12, 06:02 PM
Thanks Nikki, I'm not put off by big bikes having ridden pillion for the last 20 odd years. However, I've only been riding solo for the last few months so I'm aware of my limitations, I certainly don't want to bite off more than I can chew. ;D

My ex had a bandit along with a hornet, both are nice bikes. Looks like I might have to go sit on a few, methinks :) :)
ps. bit gutted to learn I'm now of an age where I'm considered 'middle' :o ;D

By the way take along the kids as well when you go look at bikes and you wont get any hassle from salesmen..speaking from experience here!!

One advantage to being 40 ish is cheaper insurance (so its not all bad) ;D ;D I dont have any no claims due to a break in bike ownership and 5 changes in the last 12 months :o and currently pay about £80 a year for insurance on my GSXR 750 :D

Christ on a bike, that's cheap! I'm currently paying about £160, which I didn't think was too bad! Nice gixxer btw ;)

Thank you I love it, one of my favourites so far but we'll see I change bikes like many women change shoes/handbags!!

I did spend quite some time on the net getting that premium - think it was with Compare the Market. I did also restrict the mileage to about 6,000 pa I think it was.

I went for the restricted licence too - for the same reason as you, it was a lot cheaper doing it on my own 125. Although I'd never pass it now on my CBR, I still can't u-turn that thing ;D

You can restrict pretty much any bike, so rather than thinking about engine size I'd recommend sitting on lots of bikes and seeing which one you feel most comfortable on. Then you can work out how to get it restricted.

I did my test on a ybr last October and now have a Suzuki GS 500 that I've got restricted! I'm 5ft 3/4 ish so height is an issue for me as well but I'm almost flat footed on the GS! I'm still learning to click with the bike as I havnt riden it much but it's a good bike, especially as I bought it from mark able so it's used as a training bike

Goldie
10-04-12, 07:26 PM
Thanks Loops, I knew it was possible to restrict anything and that some bikes take it better than others. It's the size thing that's more pertinent, you're right. ;D

lol, funny what you say about not passing on your CBR, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't even pass my driving test these days having passed it 20 years ago ;D

Oh, that's encouraging, Hazel, thanks for that :D

Sounds like you've got the same dilemma I had. All throughout my time as a learner (and even up to taking my test) I had people telling me to buy a big bike and restrict it rather than buy a 250 etc but I knew that I struggled the last time I rode a heavier bike. The thing that helped me make the decision is knowing what sort of riding I wanted to be doing and inevitably what sort of bike I'd want to get/work up to

Goldie
10-04-12, 09:27 PM
that's exactly it - having never ridden a bigger bike I can't say for sure but I'm on tippy's when stationary on my YBR so can only assume having more weight would be an issue. I'm hoping to build up to a bigger bike eventually, of course, but I'm in no rush, which is why I'm going down the restricted route. :)

Mark_Able

If you get a 250, you're insuring, taxing, and running a 250. If you get a restricted 600, you're insuring, taxing, and running a 600. But it only has 33bhp, so goes no quicker than the 250. Direct Access, we've discovered, doesn't suit everyone. When I was younger, the test was done on a 250, then later a 125. Most people didn't jump up to a 600 as their first bike. If they did, it wouldn't have been comparable to a new 600 anyway. Most people stepped up gradually, as they got used to each new bike. Most people now, see DAS as the only way to go. It's not the case, and you shouldn't be pressured one way or the other. You should do what feels right for you. But coming back to the original question, I'd go for a Ninja 250 or Honda CBR250 or Yamaha YBR250 (if you can find one). :)

voodoo
10-04-12, 10:17 PM
sounds like you're making a good move and good on you for taking the time to consider it properly. Only you can say what you're comfortable with so it's always good to weigh up the options

but then again i am biased ::) the gt is nearly the same size as the 650 so is really easy to get used to the weight and size.

best advice i can offer is already suggested by sitting on a couple and see what 'feels' right....happy hunting :)

Hi Goldie,

I did the restricted access course and currently ride a restricted GS500. Can't fault it at all to be honest, the bike handles the restriction well and can still get up to speed quite quickly when necessary.

I've found it to be the perfect transition between the little YBR125 that I learned on, and whatever bigger bike I go for next.

For what it's worth, I only went for a restricted bike because at the time I couldn't find any 250s that were within my price range/weren't knackered, but I definitely don't regret my decision.

Hope that helps!

I looked at some 250cc bikes when I was buying. but being tall I had the opposite requirements to you Goldie - I wanted something with a bit of bulk on it!

Because of what I wanted, I found I didn't have as much choice in 250s as I did in 500/600s, so I was going to have to pay more to get equivalent condition to what I could get as a bigger bike. A Ninja 250 was going to be £900 a year to insure :o My CBR has cost me under £200.

Come along to the H&C one sunny evening and have a sit on bikes - everyone is very obliging and normally happy to let you if you ask! I must have sat on most of the bikes that turn up when I was deciding ;D

Hi Goldie

Just been in the same situation as you after passing my test on a honda cbf125.................I opted for the sv650s after sitting on a fair few bikes. I'm vertically challenged too (5ft 2") so found it ideal for both height, weight, cost & insurance.

I found most dealers really helpful & in fact the one I purchased is second hand & the dealer threw in the 33bhp ecu restrictor in for FREE!

Hope this helps.

Very best of luck for your test.

Cheap as chips to insure and run. Dead reliable too. That's the right model to go for, being as it's the last of the Japanese built bikes. Black frame and swingarm means it was built in Spain. Build quality is not so good. Silver frame is Japanese. Get an insurance quote, and you'll see what I mean about cheap. :)

I'd go with the SV. It is a great bike and should you enjoy it that much most of the performance kit from the thou' fit very nicely onto it.
The GS is great for a first big bike, I had one for 3 years but was always frustrated by the lack of extra kit. Huggers were rare and were a crazy price when I had mine.

Been riding my restricted 650 Bandit for 6 months after doing the restricted test on a 125cc. Now my boyfriend has got the bug and is doing the full test and he's getting a unrestricted bike. So now even though I've been plugging away for years riding 125cc bikes Im gonna be following him cos I wont have the power! Now I have to wait 18months before I can take the damn restricter off(legally). Oh why didnt I do the test on the 500cc...

I did my DAS test on a CB500 then bought a 600 Bandit - I found the Bandit heavy in comparison even after having it lowered and I struggled a bit with it. Now I am on a lighter Triumph which has made a very big difference. So I would consider the weight of the bike as really important as well as all the other great tips you have been given.

Also......I wonder why the training on a bigger bike is so much more expensive - the test fees are the same. I would have thought most trainers have overall bike policies so insurance, or petrol would not be so much more??

Good luck with the search :)

I did my test in November, and am riding a cagiva canyon 500, 33bhp as standard, Challenging to find replacemt parts.
Good luck.

The blue one is still there, course starts Sunday so I'm gonna hang on til I pass. Still looking though, Budget Bikes in Swindon have a couple too :D

Would have a long think before I used them heard a lot of bad things?.

Oh, I wouldn't buy one from there, just wanted to sit on their stock lol ;D ....which is exactly what I did. Jeeeez, they are heavy. :o There isn't a great deal of difference in the height of the GS500 & SV650 - i'm on tip toes with both but I sat on a naked SV and a sports SV and sheeeeet, I really noticed the sports position and the bike felt so much heavier.
Sat on a GS & SV in Oxford too and they felt a little lower.

Probably worth checking if the ones you are looking (that seem a bit too high) can be lowered. I think for most bikes it is fairly simple! I am sure they will be able to tell you at the shop you are looking in - you might be able to negotiate lowering as a freebie!!

Yes, I have checked and the are both easy to lower. Anything up to 35mm :D

Beware that lowing a naked sv is hard as the bars go over the top of the forks. This isn't an issue on a S as these have clip on style bars.

Sounds obvious, but make sure, if you do lower it, do both ends! .. I've seen so many where they only lower the back (usually by swapping the suspension dogbones for longer ones) and leave the front - you'll end up doing strange things to the handling that way..

I'd heard of this before, can't believe people would only lower one end!

I know where there's a 600cc Bandit for sale in Box - if it's still there.

£1400,and although it is a Cat D repaired, the owner has been riding for about 3 years since, and it looks straight and tidy.

OOoh cheers Loops, but looking for a Hornet rather than a Bandit tbh, do you know if Hornets take restriction okay? Also, I'm wondering if they can be lowered too? Any idea? My ex husband had a Hornet but I only ever rode pillion back on those days. Never bloody sat on it on my own, Doh! ::)

Loops

I have no idea, but my 600 CBR has coped with his restriction and I think they are very similar (if not the same) engines, just different tuning levels.

You'll be going up and down the gears more to keep in your power band, and have to face being left in the dust if anyone on an unrestricted bike decides to give theirs the beans (Mikey can take off and leave me like I'm standing still when we're out ;D). But lets face it, you're always gonne have that with only 33bhp!

Passed my Mod 1 today :D
I think I've found my bike:
http://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-motorbikes/honda-hornet-for-sale-one-very-careful-owner-v-low-mileage-years-mot-5-months-tax-black/100293408

Owner says she is 5ft 2 with a 29 inch leg (same as me) and rides it with ease.
Milage is only 2044 and has FSH on an 02 plate. Any advice?

All that for £2.5k
:D

If you decide it's worth a look, take someone with you as a voice of reason so if you see it all fall in love they can point out anything you might overlook ;)
