1991 Honda CRM 250 Front suspension question

Hi,
just taken front susp. apart, and am now baffled as to how i remove the lower leg from the upper tube seems to be attached above the seals somewhere, im a complete novice with suspension so any thoughts would be helpful,

undo the spindle caps, then look at it upside down, theres normally an allen bolt above the spindle housing goes straight through and holds it all togeter, make sure youve unwound the top adjusters right out first and drained them out, tip them upside down and push slowly down on them, the springs will have shot out from under the top caps by now so you wont hurt yourself, tip them upside down undo the bolt and extract over a bucket, if there are shells and sleeves in there then dont mix them up, if your just changing leakey seals then you dont normally have to strip them right out ! 8-)

If it is like a superdream then there are three things to remove.

1 - The damper rod bolt. As above at the bottom of the forks there will be a 6mm AF ccap head to undo. Do this before removing the spring but after draining the oil or the whole thing turns.

2 - The spring. after removing the stantion and draining there will be a 14?mm af allen piece in the top of the forks. undo this gently as it will spring a little once undone. it is a very fine thread so will take a while to undo. It should come easly so don't force it.

3 - Dust cap, retainer and oil seal. Pull off the outer dust cap, this will reveal the oil seal at retainer. The retainer is usually a type od circlip, so using circlip pliers remove this gently. Once removed extend the forks violently in your hands, bashing the stantion against the oil seal. Repeat this until the oil seal, and fork stantion pop out.

yours are "upside downs" and are a bit trickier than "right way ups" depending on the internal construction, you may need a tool to compress the spring to get the top nut on the damper rod undone....this is a two person job.

"you tube" has been good int he past for fork strip tutorials...have a look on there, the tool can be home made 9 times out of 10.

What are you aiming to do? If you have no experience or special tooling it may be simpler to take the forks to a suspension specialist who can do what you want done and turn them round in no time, replacing any bushes and seals that need doing along the way. It won't cost the earth and would be money well spent 8-)
