I bet thousands of students were cheering this morning on hearing the news that the Lib-Dems lost their £500 deposit in yesterday’s Barnsley central by-election. The Lib-Dems' vote share fell from 17.3 per cent to 4.2 per cent, finishing in a humiliating sixth place behind UKIP and the BNP. The Tories' fell from 17.3 per cent to 8.3 per cent.
I know it’s quite common for the government of the day to get a ‘good kicking’ from the electorate in a by-election and I never read too much into such results, but this one did give me a lift.
