View Full Version : The Most Awesome Piece Of Music Writing ever?

Just sat here scoffing sarnies in my lunch break at work with my ipod on and it Emerson, Lake & Palmer popped up.

Now it occurred to me that the (nearly) 10 minute version of "fanfare for the common man" is a fairly unique piece of music. Originally written in 1943 by Aaron Copland. In itself it was brilliant. But really came to life when ELP turned it on its head in 1977.

It's not my fav sone but it's got to be noted for its composition on two occasions.

So what do you think the best ever music composition is (not necessarily your fav song)

Domino by Genesis is a personal fav for me though I'm sure ELP or Yes would probably have much better examples if I'd listened to them..

“Emerson, Lake & Palmer” that brings back lots of memories, along with early Genesis and Barclay James Harvest - good days [smiley=thumbup.gif]

I have the S&M Metallica album on lots. Hearing an entire symphony orchestra's compositions in accompaniment with the heavy metal of Metallica really send shivers down my spine. Especially on their more melodic tracks such as No Leaf Clover & Nothing Else Matters...

The track that does it for me on that album is The Call of Ktulu :)

Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd

A classic.

Anything by the Cheeky Girls.

Or failing that, John Williams' Duel Of The Fates from Episode 1. An incredible piece of music, way too good to 'waste' on a film score:

Or possibly Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries:

Or maybe even O Fortna from Carmina Burana by Carl Orff:

The Magic Flute is great, but prefer his Marriage of Figaro, especially Sull’ Aria - beautiful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLtqZewjwgA

Saying that Metallica’s Unforgiven 11 is brill too [smiley=thumbup.gif]

M fav is either, "If you tolerate this your children will be next" - Manic Street Preachers or "Shine on you Crazy Diamond" (parts 1-7) - Pink Floyd.

Anything by Pink Floyd. There's not a single second of their music that's wrong for me - how many bands can you credit with that?

Ha...technically that's not really music, more of an indulgent experiment (which i don't think they even thought that much of with hindsight!!! Certainly built up their catalogue of 'strange noises' though)

Some of the early stuff's a bit hit n' miss but i guess you'd just have to have been in the room to benefit from that and more than likely have been on what Syd was up too ;)

For me i jumped on the band wagon with the Wall when i was 12.....and that's where it all started, records, books, video, still have a craving for all that is Floyd and there's just not enough out there to satisfy it. Managed to get a personal message to Nick Mason last year who then very kindly signed my book.

To choose a particular favourite track would just be impossible and so dependant on my mood and NEEEED :)

Animals is a great album. Floyd stripped down production wise with nothing there that doesn't need to be there, some of Roger's best lyrics, every note in the right place musically. Very very under-rated album.

Love it :) :) :) :) :) :)

Indeed but I find Brightman just so forced .... Marilyn Horne would be wonderful at her prime in this piece.

Gotta agree with Comfortably Numb.... won't bore you but when my Dad died I left him and put that track on to get myself together.....it gets me every time ...strange :'(

Zulu theme and the great music from John Barry

Just so much it's a job to name anything ... errr how about symphonic metal Nightwish ..Ghost Love Score :)

Fascinating selections being offered, I'm going to spend some time surfing you tube now.

Basil, I saw Floyd perform The Wall - it was magic. I also enjoyed the Animals concert.
