View Full Version : So what's causing this current cold spell?

Global warming ;D ;D ;D ;D

Seriously, according to the Met Office (whom I believe to be a completely trustworthy lot), the current cold spell is being caused by the warming of the southern hemisphere's strataspheric conditions. This has also resulted in the hottest day ever in Australia today - 46 degrees centigrade.

I think its a good example of how the worlds varying temperatures interact with each other to give a colder location in one part of the world caused by a warmer one elsewhere in the world. Interesting, no?

Top-20 Ways to tell a Global Warming doubter probably hasn't done any research?

1) Criticizes (or just mentions) Al Gore.

2) Claims that as many or more scientists doubt AGW as agree with it.

3) Asks a simple question like "If humans are causing global warming, what made the planet come out of the last ice age?" and pretends it's a compelling argument. In other words 'if I can't answer this question, obviously nobody can.'

4) Claims the current warming is part of a 'natural cycle' and doesn't know what causes natural cycles.

5) Claims the current warming is due to the Sun even though no scientific study has come to this conclusion.

6) "Global warming has stalled."

7) Makes a political remark (i.e. communist, liberal, etc.) left-wing socialist :P
8) Makes a conspiracy remark (i.e. it's just the UN trying to take over the world). Or my personal favourite, "follow the money".

9) Thinks scientists haven't considered the fact that climate has changed in the past, or that Mars is warming.

10) Thinks the greenhouse effect is unproven or that adding more CO2 to the atmosphere will not increase the greenhouse effect even though Venus is hotter than Mercury.

11) Thinks that one volcanic eruption emits more CO2 than humans have in 5,000 years.

12) "It's snowing in Vermont in the middle of winter. Where's global warming?!"

13) Can't answer a simple scientific question (i.e. how is the observed increase in greenhouse gases not causing warming?).

14) Cites JunkScience, Fox News, right-wing blog, Inhofe's site, etc.

15) Makes absurd claims with zero citations.

16) Blames global warming on water vapor, cow farts, beer/soda carbonation, etc.

17) Is named after a gelatinous substance, awarded himself an honorary doctorate, and rigged the voting system in order to gain some semblance of credibility despite being guilty of most of the items on this list.

18) "Models are just guesses" or "we can't predict the future".

19) "Soon they're going to tax us for breathing!"

20) Cites one outlying study and claims it disproves dozens of others which are in agreement. ;) :D :)

OK, so post number 28 is not your own comment on this subject, its a quote from a previous thread made on a different subject by someone else. If you had made that clear at the time, it would have put your post #32 into context.

I agree though that this has got pointless. I started the thread as an example of how the worlds weather interacts with itself and how you can have colder weather in one part of the world as a result of climate change, wheres the worlds global average temperatures are increasing - along with the reduction in the ice caps. People tend to always quote global warming as it can't be happening because there happens to be a temperature drop in one part of the world.

Getting back on track with this interesting post. The "experts" have been forecasting global warming for years. However, if it continues then we shall be in for a temperate climate, wet, wet, wet.
Interestingly though we were hit by a Gamma ray burst in the 8th century.

Swanny,

I think it is unfortunate if my post on GW doubters upset you as that was certainly not my intention. Perhaps I misread the mood of the thread – it was only meant to be light-hearted banter.

Although I am very thick skinned and enjoy debating on a whole range of topics on numerous forums/platforms, I for one would never look upon my fellow debaters/contributors as enemies, and very much hope that they would feel the same way towards me.

IMHO, anyone who leaves a debate/discussion harbouring a grudge should refrain from engaging in debates/discussions at the outset.

1) The climate change is real, and there is more to it than CO2 and 'global warming' - it is all extremes.
2) The entire solar system appears to be changing simultaneously.
3) The magnetic changes on earth began hundreds of years ago, and need to be tracked more effectively.
4) Weather modification appears to be implemented, and IMHO it is a zero-sum game.

Fact vs Opinion: The 'Weather Modification' segment contains many statements of my personal opinion on the negative aspects of the various applications. I have nothing but my humble opinion on those matters; humans survived this event before, and we can do it again now.

HAARP comments are meant to help focus our efforts to properly identify these various machines of modification. While auroral modulation has it's benefits, my negative comments about weather modification applies to HAARP as well.

I've been looking at this for years now and I still don't know what to think.
Maybe the video is correct and it's the methane releases and the stupid arsehole governments trying to fix what they've fcuked up by trying to play god that are causing the changes. If he is right we don't have long left so might as well enjoy what we've got.

IMO Climate change is not as worrying as Fukushima still in meltdown after 2 years. Chernobyl was covered in concrete after 7 days. But the concrete covering Chernobyl is now in a bad way.

It could be global warming or it could be due to the fact that.......IT'S F#CKING WINTER!
What next? the leaves turning brown in September is due to climate change.

Exactly we should all remember its February.

And its still February in the southern hemisphere where its quite hot at the moment..... the threads about the interaction of the climate across the whole world not just in our own backyard ;)

Is it? In what way?

I haven't noticed any changes because of it over here in the UK. It wouldn't be the first or the last time that a nuclear reactor went awol either but I can't see the world ending because of it or the earth knocked off its axis as a result ;) The world didn't end following Nagasaki, Hiroshima, Long Island or Chernobyl. Sure, pretty bad for the locals but looking at the bigger picture I can't see it having a long term affect on my or my childrens future if it goes belly up over there.

It's already gone belly up. It's pumping out radiation which is circulating the Northern Hemisphere. Airborne Radiation doesn't just stay where next to the source, it's also leaking into the sea which is spreading.
The West coast of North America is being effected with fall out now.

Apart from moving you and your loved ones to the Southern Hemisphere there's bugger all you can do about it so best not look in to it. Of course that's only a short term fix as it's slowly making it's way there.

Not to worry ;)

Jeez, we don't need to be wearing any HiViz anymore....we must be glowing in the dark! Best stop riding our bikes and start stocking up on food then.

As I said, its not the first or the last time a nuclear reactor has gone belly up... we will survive! Strange how its not on the world news though - that we're all in iminent mortal danger....it was all over the news when Chernobyl blew. Nothing on the breakfast news this morning. Maybe all the news chiefs around the world are keeping it hush hush. Or is it only on the internet that we're doomed? ;)

Edit: A quick look on the internet shows research is available that Fukashima has put out a 10th of the radiation and affected a 10th of the area of population as Chernobyl. Hopefully MotoGP will go ahead as it did last year.

I think it's very strange that it's not all over the mainstream media, I can show you hundreds of news stories that are talking about it. And experts in the field of radiation that are calling for something to be done.
You're right it was all over the news when Chernobyl blew and they covered that in concrete within 7 days. Wonder why they made such a big deal out of Chernobyl but don't seem bother about Fukushima when it's four times the problem??
Just out of interest what good is stocking up on food going to do?? You can't hide from radiation. And we should be riding our bikes even more just in case our days are numbered :)

Radiation will kill off all plant life and the animals we eat...hence the need to stock up on things with a long shelf life. Yeah, cabin fever has struck - we need to ride our bikes more ;)

Maybe Fukushima is just a conspiracy theory ;)

If you were involved in the industry you'd be able to comment from a position of knowledge and/or experience. From outside the industry you can't and have to scour the internet and take your pick of the ill-informed, the partially true, the blatantly untrue, the conspiracy theories and so on.

Go hug a tree.... 8-)

I don't know who you're referring to Scotty but does that mean unless someone is an expert on a subject that they can have no opinion on any subject??
I follow F1 but am not involved in motorsport so does that mean I'm not able to have an opinion??
;D

Maybe if it's on the tele it's true??

Remember October 1987 Michael Fish prediction of the Hurricane. Even the well informed, experienced with all the high tech equipment at their disposal can't predict what Mother Nature is going to do. ::)

Hug a tree, may get blown over or struck by lightning :o :)
