View Full Version : Decorating.... it can be worth it in the end!

As some of you may or may not know, RVFBabe and I have recently moved house (22nd March) and all we've been doing since then is pretty much decorating the house from top to bottom. The house still needs lots doing to it, but so far we've done two bedrooms, the study and we're part way through the lounge. The reason for this thread/post? Well, I just wanted to show off our lounge as a lot of time and effort (and money!) has gone in to it, and although it's not quite finished yet, you'll get the general idea.

To begin with the lounge looked like this:-

Now this was not to our taste and we decided that we'd rip off the wood panelling that was all around the lower half of the wall, and remove all of the wallpaper as well. The wood pannelling came off easy enough, but the wallpaper was a back breaking job and took days to do. We were working to a tight timescale with this work as I'd decided that I wanted some "boys toys" for the room, and to complete the "clean" look of the "boys toys" we needed to have the walls completely replastered.

This photo shows some of the cabling required for the boys toys, but it also shows the very same wall that the fireplace was on. Yep, I didn't like the fireplace and we therefore ripped it out as well. We did think of getting a new one, but given the costs of circa £2k for it we decided that it just wasn't worth the money to us.

The plaster takes 5 days to dry and therefore we just couldn't do a thing in the room apart from laying some laminate flooring.

We were told by the plasterer that we needed to "white wash" the walls as it was fresh plaster and that we had to use a mix of 3 parts water to 1 part paint. However, it took a while to "paint" the room as a roller was useless due to it soaking in the mixture and therefore it was time to grab a big old brush and suffer the arduous task of painting the room slowly.

After that had dried we could get around to painting the walls (and yay, I could use a roller!). As you can see, we had to make do without the sofa's, etc.. whilst all of this was being done!

Once all of the painting was done it was time to install the "boys toys" and below is the frame needed for the plasma, and one of the speakers mounted to the wall:-

And now the plasma is up..... :D

The chap in the bottom corner of the above picture is Rob, the installation engineer from the AV company we sourced the kit from and used for the installation.

This is the rack we've got to house all of the kit in:-

The eagle eyed amongst you will notice the plug on the rear wall has had some work done underneath it. This is because we found out that electrics in the room were not up to standard and were basically spurs of spurs, etc... This meant we had to get a sparky in to sort this out and we are still in the process of making good the work he had to do - bit of a pain in the arse, but at least the house won't go up in flames due to dodgy electrics!

This is the plasma with all of the cables connected now, and unfortunately for us the first DVD we could lay our hands on was 2 Fast 2 Furious! lol! ;D

Yep, as you can see, the skirting was still being worked on by us! :)

This is a shot of the plasma at night:-

And, some people will like this and others won't.... I have pimped the plasma! :D It's controlled by a normal on/off switch so we can have the choice of whether or not it's pimped.

The blue glow is emphasised more due to the camera and in reality it's not that obvious but it certainly sets the plasma off when watching a DVD or playing on the 360.

The plasma was only installed last Wednesday and the reason for not posting this thread sooner - well, Gixer Paul and Rich AKA Baldspeed (for those that don't know, they are my brothers) didn't know anything about the plasma, etc.. and the first time they saw it was yesterday.

Karen and I are extremely happy with it all, and it certainly makes the hard work we've put in to date worth it. Sorry for the long post, but I just thought I'd share it all with you and give you guys something to discuss/talk about should you want to. As I type this Karen is still working on stuff in the lounge and if people are interested I will post up some more pictures when more of the "jobs" have been finished.

Yeah the egg's are superb, and the guys who installed it said they sound better than the Infinity Oreus's which they both had and were also ones I had thought about getting.

Have the Q series across the front, bit of overkill really for movies but wanted the bigger speakers for when i played music plus I really liked the shape of them! ::) 12 inch REL on sub duty.

So how did the Rich and Paul like it then?

I think so! I'm sure they will be along sometime to post up their thoughts. They both certainly enjoyed watching Pimp My Ride on it yesterday anyway! :)

Richie, with all the bloody controls I've got at the moment it feels like the hub for the Enterprise! ;D
