Yes- really. BMW K1200S holds the world land speed record for normally aspirated stock production motorcycles in the 1000-1300cc capacity. I nearly choked when I saw it on an unrelated google search. Done at Bonneville BB! Howzboutthat!

Well boys - what do you say to that!!!!

So much for the staid BMW - I take it yours won't go that fast G?

And the Bonneville gets a mention too - even if it is only as a place name!

No, mine can't go round corners fast either, but its obvious where the gene pool came from. Pure bred engineering counts everytime!

Bike or Rider hmm

we still talking gene pool?

I'm slow on the straight and slow in the corners. I got nowt to prove, so it must be the bike in this case.

past it? ;D

Come on BB - that was low, so low.

Well I am a lot lower than you - as in shorter in the leg!! ;)

Anybody wanting to reply back to this thread can you please keep it on track otherwise I will lock it. This thread is about the K1200S holding a world land speed record. We do not want it to become a BMW bashing thread, or one where everybody suddenly claims that their bikes are quicker, etc...

BB and Graemes banter is fine so can we just keep it to that kind of level please.

Thank you.

Still a BMW at the end of the day!

And for that you have to show them some respect. Certainly shows that they are capable of making quick bikes and with the testing they are doing behind the scenes for their racing bikes it should be a good basis for them to work from.

Just to even things up. It's expected that the Kawasaki ZX14 will break the outright record later this year, but not in the same class as it's 1,400cc. The most powerfull roadgoing bike is a 700bhp Hayabusa, and the fastest speeding ticket is 205mph on a Honda RC51.

Credit where's credit due, be it on the racetrack, over the 1/4 mile or on an old salt lake.

where was the fastest speeding ticket? Not the M25 I'll bet! :)

probably warminster bypass knowing how many tickets are issued there :P

BB

oooh! Just 'cos I got my ticket there!! :-[ And no, it wasn't doing 205 or even 105!

what was the speed of the bmw anyway, it's not been mentioned yet!

Snowy

The K1200S had an average speed of 173.57 mph and top speed of 176.789 mph after two runs. The same bike/rider also clocked a record speed of 169 mph, riding the K1200S two-up with passenger.

Another record at Bonneville was achieved by the K1200 R Power Cup bike, setting an AMA speed record for unstreamlined motorcycles in the 1300cc class at an average of 164.480 mph and top speed of 167.331mph.

And before you all jump up and down with "my bikes faster than that", the FIM only count it if it's under controlled conditions with proper timing equipment. You can't add on the 10% inaccurancy built into our own bikes speedos. So your 205mph BB was actually only 185mph.

Surprising news indeed, as without falling into the old arguement, i would have put my money on either a ZX12 or a Hayabusa to take that prize.

BMW's have always been strong in the engine department. Their new superbike/moto gp bike projects will only enhance this

I was surprised to Richie. The reality is that there are probably loads of bikes that would beat it, but have not been put up against the timing gear.

Well done Graeme, you tell'em I'm with you ;)

this does present a good argument on a lot of data thatwe recieve, because an experiment can't account for every parameter, the experiment can't be completely accurate.

i.e. my bike showed faster than that on a dino and I have taken it past that according to my speedo. so the speedo could be inaccurate as stated earlier by graeme and no conditions are ever going to be as perfect as on the dino where weather conditions and aerodynamics aren't a factor either.

still quick though, especially as it's a shaft driven heavy piece of kit (I think I'm right with the shaft thing!)

I think we all know that that was b**locks! (RC51 Or SP1 as its known over here.....)

Maybe if you rode it off of The white cliffs of Dover........ :D

We all have different reasons for riding the bikes that we do - all bikes have something to offer that they do better than another. Just like people. Individual choice and all that.

Thats why my signature says what it does! I'm in the lucky position of having a couple of very different bikes to ride. :)

it is a good position to be in, I'm screwed as my bike is my only vehicle, if that goes wrong.... well, it just better hadn't!!!
