Incident - A40, Denham roundabout

Police are appealing for witnesses after an incident on the A40 at the Denham roundabout on Sunday (27/7).

At 3.30pm two student motorcyclists were travelling along the A40 from Oxford Road, Denham, under the instruction of a Metropolitan police officer. They all turned left on the roundabout travelling in the direction towards London on Western Avenue.

The instructor, a 33-year-old man, from Buckinghamshire, became aware of a blue Porsche Carrerra 911 driving aggressively behind his students and undertaking other vehicles. He indicated to the driver of the Porsche to slow down and then manoeuvred in front of it. The Porsche then collided into the rear of the instructor, knocking him off his white Honda motorcycle and into the central reservation and the path of oncoming traffic.

The Porsche, then on the wrong side of the carriageway, reversed and collided with one of the student motorcyclists, knocking him off his blue Yamaha, causing serious leg injuries.

The occupants of the Porsche, three white men abandoned the Porsche and threatened another motorist, a 43-year-old woman, from Buckinghamshire, in a black BMW with an axe. The frightened and shocked woman got out of the car and the men got into her vehicle. They left on the northbound carriageway on the A40 towards the junction on the A412.

Both, the Metropolitan police officer and the student motorcyclist, a 43-year-old man, from Bedfordshire, were taken to Hillingdon Hospital. The officer sustained minor injuries and was later released. The student is in a serious condition.

The other motorcyclist, a 48-year-old man, from Hertfordshire, who was riding a black KTM and the female driver of the BMW did not sustain any injuries, but are both naturally shocked and traumatised by the incident.

Detective Inspector Dave Allen, leading the investigation, said: “This was a shocking, malicious incident, one you only expect to see in the movies and it has left all the victims involved extremely traumatised.

“We have discovered the Porsche was stolen from St Albans, Hertfordshire, and it was on false number plates from Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. It is imperative anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity contacts me or Crimestoppers. I would like to hear from anyone who saw anything in either St Albans or Cheshunt, the collision itself, the Porsche before the collision or the BMW leave the scene travelling at speed on the A40, or onto the A412 North Orbital Road towards Rickmansworth.

“We need to find these men and make sure they can not do this again.”

Det Insp Allen can be contacted at Thames Valley Police via the 24-hour non-emergency number, 0845 8 505 505. If you do not want to talk to the police, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Note to media:
The two student motorcyclists are not members of a police force. The metropolitan officer was carrying out a Bike Safe lesson with the students, which is a road safety initiative to promote safer riding.
