Looking into getting a road legal 250 (electric start)
4-stroker 'Muddy bike' for off road.

Apart from KTM 250F Can anyone with knowledge of off road bikes recommend a good road legal off roader & reason why?

I did look at a KLX250 but I have absolutley no knowledge off off roading. [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]

You need to talk to JD, JayDee or Johnny Dangerous or whatever he's called here.

Yamaha WR250f - some earlier models don't have electric start
KTM EXC 250f or 'racing' as the earlier models were called

Both these bikes will come with lighting kit fitted - most enduro bikes will be road legal as they have to have lights etc for racing regs

You don't want anything bigger than a 250 due to weight and unmanageable power off road. And 4 strokes are easier to ride, and of course come with the magic button :)

hello ONFIRE.
some good info so far from people.
KLX is a weeee bit heavy and softish, but ok for a newbie. make sure it doesnt smoke as they suffer bore wear.
same with an XR250, find a good one and it will last for ever, stay away from smokers tho.
allways buy something "Fully homologated for road use tho" legally, xr's and converted "Road Registered" motocrossers are NOT legal for road use! they are for "Competition use only" and state Endure on the log book instead of PLC.
fully homologated means that one was supplied to the government, who tested it and stated it was compliant with british law, and can be used legally on the highways. they will have no probs passing MOT's.

a few choices dependant upon price for a newbie....
Upto £1000.
yamaha serow xt225 (if youre a bit challenged in the leg length dept).
kawasaki super sherpa (same), Honda_star has got pics of one on here, mega rare!!!
XR250 (tatty one) if youre not worried about homologation.
KTM 200 2 stroke ( a smoker but VERY good, homologated)
many older bikes on eeeeebay, have a good look, some kit is quite good.
£1000-£2000
Yamaha TTr250, good bikes, light and softer than a WR250F
an early electric start WR250F (any noise from the engine will require a new piston and barrel replate.SOME models were homologated).
Honda CRF250X (early one, good kit but not homologated)
£2000 up.
KTM250, WR250F, and Gasgas (fully homologated)

personal advice, dont go above 250cc, theyre plenty fast for lanes, and are easy on us "Not so young people".....
buy a bike that fits you, is nice and light, and doesnt smoke unless it should.

once youve bought it, give me a shout, im gonna try to get a few WB's out across the plains.

have fun.
