Had a call from Riders today (was looking at getting a new Doocat before I got the 900SS), they are currently doing 0% finance for 3 years on all new Ducati (Monsters 696, 796, 1100 evo, 848, Streetfighter, Hypermotard, Diavel, 1198 etc...)

I'd be tempted to ride a few bikes before settling on the monster Jackie. Don't forget a doocat will mean more maintenance than other bikes

They have a reputation for unreliability - even the brand new ones :/. Having said that, you'd have a warranty so shouldn't matter too much! But always worth test riding a few other bikes too I'd say!

ALL new bikes and cars can and will break down, law of averages... ;)

Ducatis before the early Nineties were - although arguably beautiful & iconic machinery - flawed mainly on the electrical side & others, a true mechanics bike...

The newer ones are as just as good as any Jap bike out there, period.

Every 7500 miles - recommend valve clearance check (Doocats have the fabled desmodromic valve system, where a cam lobe works an opening rocker pushing the valve open, another lobe works a CLOSING rocker, mechanically closing the valves, no valve springs to be seen!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocfIYUc5bpU

If you miss a gear and REVVVVVVV the cr@p out of your bike - you will not and cannot mash your valves into your pistons due to valve bounce, it is an mechanical impossibility. :)

(Desmodromic system invented in the mid-50's by the Ducati engineers due to the poor spring-steel available at the time, allowing their race-bikes to achieve reliably at the time unheard-of red-lines??! Naturally modern valve springs work no trouble at all, Ducati keeps the desmo valves for the same reasons Harley still run pushrod-actuated valves...

A) Nostalgia

B) They WORK.

Jap bikes ALSO have to have their valve clearances checked, this is often overlooked because:

i)There are a LOT of valves to check - 16 per engine in a four cylinder

ii)It is a Royal pain in the A$$. Arguably easier to drop the engine out and do it rather than drop shims into your crankcases... When were yours last done?? HMMM??

Every 15,000 miles or two years: Both cambelts changed.

There is a lot of humming and ahhing about this - I can confirm on my 900SS - & most Doocats - it is a 20-minute job. :)

Bike on rear paddock stand, belt covers off, sparkplugs out to let you turn the engine over easier, ploopploop the engine round in gear with the back wheel so that the pulley & casing marks line up, release belt tensioners, off with old belts, on with new, re-tension, refit plugs & covers, start engine.

You have to ask yourself if you will still have the bike in two years/15,000 miles later?? It's a LOOOOOOOONG time in anyones life.

Do they still use cambelts on the new ones? There is some extra consumables if so involved in some service intervals, genuine Italian parts can be pricey, a brake lever for mine is cheaper from a Ducati dealer than an Aprilia one..!?

Maintenance, what's the difference between a Ducati and other bikes then? :-?

There's a lot of hype and bull over Ducati reliability and maintenance costs. Back in the bad old days of the 80's and 90's ducati's build and reliability was shocking and servicing was mafiosa style extorsion!

In the last ten years this has altered racically. A few people I know have new ducatis and have reported no issues with reliability (execpt a neutral light fault - was fixed very quickly) and that servicing costs are on par with the japanese manufacturers. They have also commented on the quality of the service recieved. The only issue I am aware of is that the engine need servicing slightly more frequently than japanese engines, but I think this would depend on the type of bike you buy and your annual milage...

They have a reputation for unreliability - even the brand new ones :/

No offence, but I think this general reputation is quite outdated.

I have owned my Ducati since March 2009 and it's never broken down on me.
The service intervals are 7500 miles and Lurkalots Honda is 6000 miles.
They have considerably improved the reliability, service intervals and what they do on each service (hence reduced the costs).

Unfortunately my experience/opinion of Riders is low although there is an excellent Ducati specialist in Clutton (can't do warranty work unfortunately).

So in general I think that opinion/reputation is outdated and things have moved on.

However if you are really on a tight budget then you might need to look at it more closely than I have.

If anyone has any questions on the 696 or wants to sit on it, then let me know.
It's certainly a good choice to look at for shorter/smaller people.

I never had any breakdowns on my duke, very reliable; although did have a new ecu, they fitted a race one FOC to cure the very intermittent hiccup.

Had a few punctures tho... but that's not the bikes fault ::)

Test rode the Multistrada the other week. Has 4 engine mapping modes at the press of a button ..Enduro and Urban settings restrict engine to 100BHP but switch to Sport (or Touring) mode and BHP goes to 150 !! ... suspension settings electronically adjust them selves depending on engine mode you are in.
Engine sounds great but I did find the gear change a bit clunky and the build quality didn't seem as good as my CB1000R.

It's a bit expensive too for the S or Touring spec bikes (nearly £15k .... would prefer to spend that on the new Skoda Fabia RSV .... 177 BHP with paddle gear change !!!!)

Oh! and talking about 3 years interest free credit .... BMW Motorrad dealers have that 0% deal on their S1000RR sports bike at the moment if anyone fancies one for £12k +)

I am pretty sure the 0% is not on the multistrada (see post 1) - please correct me if I'm wrong as it's one of the bikes on my list (but probably too tall).

Looks like you might be right (yesterday I had riders Autumn 2011 newsletter announcing the new 12% finance deal for the multistrada but looks like that precedes this).
Be aware though they have put up their prices 10%.
I'm waiting for the Honda cross tourer to come out in the spring.

Well having owned my Ducati 916 since 2008 i have had a few problems with her and all have been very silly electrical faults, touch wood, the mechanics of the bike are perfect. The electrical parts can be expensive and very time consuming to fault find. I service it and change the cam belts every 2years which cost's me about £130 in total.

But Ducati's do have a problem with the engine paint flaking off, i know of people who have had engine case's replaced under warranty because of this.

However having said that, everytime i swing my leg over her and start her up i get the biggest smile ever, riding her around chucking it into corners the acceleration, braking even tank slappers are the best fun to be had on a bike and i wont ever be parting with her. And anyone put of by ducati issues should just take one out for a ride and then see if your opinion has changed. ;) :)

I had a 2004 Ducati, loved every minute of it for five years and would have had bought another with out a doubt if they had updated the ST4. It never broke down unlike my brand new Beemer !

848 is the nicest handling bike I have ever ridden.

In my opinion V twin is the best engine configuration !
