Clutchless gear changes

Had a go at clutchless gear changes tonight.
Seems great from 3rd gear up, even smoother than using the clutch.
Does anyone else here do them???

Depends what kind of mood I'm in. Always best to keep the gas on, while you then apply pressure to the gear lever (it won't change gear when under load), then snap the throttle shut and open very quickly. Just don't try it going down the 'box. Did that once, and ruined the whole gearbox on a Fireblade... ::)

Oh, and some 'box's don't seem to like it. It was very easy to miss gears on the old R1 doing clutchless changes. Sometimes it seemed to jam in one gear... :-?

Never intentionally on a road bike, your engine has to drop 2-3000rpm instantaneously as the gears change - so your cush drive, chain, clutch basket, gear dogs and bearings take this shock loading? Its "de-riguer" on race bikes but then they rebuid their engines quite often!

Best done under full throttle, high revs? Does seem remarkably smooth when done right!

Wouldnt advise it in town / part throttle tho... ;)

Yep I do - some bikes I've had I wouldnt do it on but most I do when going along quickly/smoothly.

kawasaki zx10r suffer from problems with gear dogs if you keep changing up /harsh changes ...mates zx10r just cost him £1200 to repair from doing this ....take ur chance ....if we didnt need a clutch or quickshift system maybe it wouldnt be fitted ? be careful !

I have always done this on my CBR600 and never had a problem. Much smother going up but always use the clutch to go down!

All a 'quickshift' does is cut the ignition momentarily, to allow for a clutchless change. Same as snapping the throttle shut and open again, just quicker... ::)

Use clutchless changes all the time. Don't bother between 1-2nd but from then on your fine. Don't clutchless down shift...
