I need your help (again lol)
I've decided on a Hornet and have narrowed it down to two bikes. They are very different though and you'll see why.
Initially, I wanted black and only black would do...then I saw a tango metallic orange one which looks really nice. I really like the orange one as it's really unusual. Prior to that I'd found a black one and now I dunno what to do. :-/
So here are the comparisons:

Black Hornet
02 plate, faired (which I'd remove) mint condition, 2044 miles :o (genuine) been serviced and MOT'd annually despite low miles. Owner is a 50+ woman and she's had the bike from new, so for 10 years. Standard seat. Price £2500. Located an hour away.

Orange Hornet
06 plate, naked. been dropped but only marked on the engine casing, few stone chips on paintwork but not too bad for 6yo bike. 21k miles partial service history but owned by a bike mechanic who's done all servicing himself (he races dragsters apparently and has a garage full of bikes). Seat lowered by sculpting out sponge, by 2 inches (I'm a short arse) located 5 miles away. Price £2750

One is 10 years old, has been lovingly cared for by a female and has exceptionally low milage.
The other has 21k, partial service history although it's been maintained by a mechanic.

If you were me, what would you do? :-? Stick a vote on the poll please ;)

I wonder if the fairing would fit my 2010 CBF??

Orange one ....
Personally I'm not a fan of that fairing, and the mileage, at 21k, isn't high at all.

2k over 10 years is nothing, BUT, even if it's been serviced, there's still things that can't be seen - like engine oil seals, cracked due to no use, 10 year old tyres that'll need changing.
TBH, in my humble opinion, I'd rather have a bike that's been used over one that's been standing.

I'd go for a bike that's been ridden and had the little gremlins that always occur fixed as it went along - fewer nasty surprises that way :)

The Orange one for me, and then spray it black :)

All things considered - I would go with the black one.

Black, it's got all history. Only partial with the orange one. And with such low miles, you could ride it around the world and back, and it would still look like sensible mileage... ;) :-*

Oh, and keep the fairing. You'll appreciate it on a run... :)

The black one is ten years old and has done 200 miles / year since then or 2000 miles in the first year and nothing since, its barely been used, it has all the service history but it doesnt really have any history, you could be looking forward to all sorts of problems machines need running. If i were buying my gut would tell me to avoid it the orange one has 20000 miles which is nothing for an engine like that and i dont suppose your planning on sticking 100 000 miles on it in the near future slightly higher milage isnt necessarily a bad thing it sounds like its been used regularly and that sparkly orange is pretty sexy ! whats your gut telling you ? 8-)

The Black one.

It has a nice little fairing, bags of history no milage and £250 cheaper.

If your looking to spend £2750 or around that mark I would say neither. You dont really want a bike without full service history and for that price im sure you can find a good honda knocking about. :)

saw the orange one today, muck fee. it's niiice. The seller is a bit of a tw@t though, and the seat foam looks a bit lumpy when it's been removed to lower it. I think i'd rather have an extra inch than a bumpy ride ;D (stop it..)

Have you seen a motorcyclists inch? Not your regular inch you know. 'My L-plate is 7" Officer'. 'My number plate is the regulation size in inches, Officer'. 'I have at least an inch of tread left on that tyre yet, Officer'. 'It's only got an inch of slack on that chain'... ;)

Got my test tomorrow, Swanny, so I'm waiting to see what happens as I could well end up having more time to look for a bike. If I pass, I'll be chomping to get out there and she's said she wont accept any other offers on it til I decide what to do.

I'm not usually this indecisive, honest. I'm usually a lot more impulsive :o

I've no idea why people aren't riding either :-/

well, I bought the black low milage one (2k miles) and she delivered it to me yesterday pm in her hubby's van. I went out for a bimble just to get used to her and she was okay for the first few miles, then started coughing and spluttering. I spoke to Rob Jones https://www.facebook.com/pages/RJ-Racing-Rob-Jones-Mobile-Motorcycle-Mechanic/143110689089984
who said the carb jests are probably blocked where it's been on it's side stand for the last year unridden. I've got it booked in for a service next weekend so can't ride it til then as it's cutting out at low revs. Boo!

she is lush though..

You need to get some fresh petrol in her.

Goldie
27-05-12, 01:38 PM
I did that las night Swanny. She wont even tick over now, boo! (and no, I didn't put diesel in her either ;D)

bobtheimp
28-05-12, 10:02 AM
*cough* orange one *cough* :P

If it's been stood without use then yes, the carb jets could well be blocked or varnished over with stale fuel deposits - doesn't take long for it to happen unfortunately - plugs will probably need replacing too - but then if it's in for a full service it'll all get done anyway :)

Glad you like the bike though :)
