Sam, I trained someone who was 17, bought a Fazer 600, and insured it for less than £600. Top bike. Don't judge a book by it's cover... ;)
Yep, loved my fazer 600, a top bike thats very forgiving to the new rider, but also a blast to ride :)
Have a scan through this website's list (http://www.powerseeker.co.uk/motorbike-insurance-groups.php) - you can get an idea of what insurance group various bikes are as I imagine you'll be needing something in a low group and not a full on sports bike as that could get pretty pricey!
You'll need to some quotes though as it doesn't always work out as you'd expect - a Ninja 250R is group 9 but was going to cost me £900! My CBR600 is group 14 (apparently) but was going to be £300 fully comp! TPFT is only £150...
Sv's aren't hugely expensive.
get a hornet! (or an SV :P )

Mk 2 Fazer 600 and while you're waiting for the Hornet & SV in the filling station you will be miles ahead :P :P :P
