View Full Version : having a dilemma

since I've got a new job in Swindon my weekly commute is upwards of 300 miles which is proving to be more of a slog than it should be on my mighty 26 horsepower steed

I'm wondering whether it would be worth my while getting a bigger bike (when I'd have to restrict it anyways) so that the faster roads won't need me to give it full beans all of the time

I've only had the bike a few months and I'd always planned on keeping it for my restriction period but I'm left wondering if the grass is greener if I get a "proper" bike. not having ridden a restricted bike I have no idea if it's going to make much difference at all :-/

can any of you kind and knowledgeable folk offer any suggestions?

you might find a restricted bike better my daughter has a cbr 600 rr that was restricted but it would still about ninety on a private road of course ;D

Im sure your bike would still outperform 99 per cent of riders on the road.

did a cbr600 restriction and that was poor performance, come out now and better now he is off his restriction.

you could well be right, I just don't know the difference not having ridden a restricted bike. think I need to find one to test ride :)

A bigger bike will probably be more comfortable than the 250, however it will cost more in fuel, insurance, tax, etc...

TBH if your keeping up with traffic on the 250 (even my superdreams could manage that!!!!) I'd stick with it and wait until the restriction comes off.

You'll always want a bigger bike.
My 600 is stupidly fast but to me it seems slow :-/

Get a bigger restricted bike then when your restriction come off, you already have a big bike :)

Some bigger bikes takes restriction better than others, I'm told. How long have you got left on your restriction?

Like Hazel I had a GS500 restricted. Was my first 'big' bike.
Would do 100 on a private road and fuel economy didn't really suffer either. It all depends on what you prefer though.
I still have the restrictors for the GS if you decide to go for one, they are for a K7 model and are pretty simple to fit.

if your working in Swindon, you should take a peek at mine, its only a 250 but its a big bike and keeps up with traffic and the speed limit very easy and comfortably :)

quite a while yet as I only passed 6 months ago. how did your cbr take it?

I think you'll find the lower powered bigger bikes take restriction well, whereas the more powerful bikes aren't so nice to ride once restricted. I'd recommend Fazer/SV650/Hornet/Bandit type bikes. The older CBR600 would probably be ok too. Or even a nice Divvy. One guy I trained had an old Divvy restricted, and said it would still do 110mph! I remember MCN restricting a Hayabusa which they then tested against a standard bike and turbo'd nutter b'stard bike. The one they thought was bad (and dangerous) was the restricted bike. There was so little power for the size of bike, and so little throttle movement, that they were forever misjudging when pulling out into traffic. ;)

Voodoo, I had the 2011 CBR250R for 9 Months / 14,500 miles and loved every minute, before this I had a CBR600F 1997 restricted to 33|BHP and there is a huge difference however I used to get, on a private road when I needed to, I got 86mph+ out of the bike... surely that's enough for the faster roads?

But yeah, if you can, get a bigger bike if you feel comfortable enough then take the restriction kit off after your 2 years...

The SV650 is a good bike to restrict, and takes it well. I'd go for one of them in your position. ;)

I have a kawasaki ER6f (650) restricted... takes restriction very well apparently. I wouldn't know as Ive not ridden an unrestricted bike, but to me it's plenty pokey enough.

Only ever tried one myself, thankfully old enough to never had to worry about the whole restricted bike thing, and I'd liken it to driving a diesel car - it gets there in the end but you've gotten nip through the box a bit quick if you want to make progress, you can sit and rev it as much as you want in some gears but it aint gonna go any faster till you change. I found the lack of throttle movement a bit weird too you simply couldn't open it up like an unrestricted bike.

I think max power output for all the noise on the Harley has got be about 16bhp?
Don't bite too hard T!

My harley is a 1200cc and is restricted too - because it's a "tractor" you honestly wouldn't know it was restricted anyway - it could pull a caravan up a vertical hill without coughing ;D

A Harley (or Buell) isn't a bad shout. The 883 is only 49bhp as standard so the restriction wouldn't hurt is a lot.

I've got your bike's bigger brother, a CBR600. I rode it restricted but have now had the restriction off or else I'd offer you a demo.

It was perfectly useable but I see now how much slower it was. However motorway cruising was easy as it wasn't at the top of the revs - as I'd lost all of those after the restriction ;D

Cheers Loops, I had a sit on a 600f the other week and I'm sold ;D

Have to wait for the next years NCB first though as it's somewhat costly to insure at the minute :-[

If it's one of the older carb models then I still have the restriction kit for it!

You'll be using the gears all the time but it does seem to handle it well considering you're taking it down to 1/3 power!

Tempting 8-)

The one I sat on was the newer fuel injected type but I've been keeping an eye out for an older one with lowish miles. How easy was it to fit the kit? Is it the washer set up?

Really easy once you know what you're doing, it is just washers. I can help if you can provide the muscle ;D

It's getting the carbs off which needs it, the rubber connectors are a really tight fit, especially once the washers are in. Much easier with two people as one can pull while the other tries to (carefully) lever them off
