Bare with me while I explain the rough details.

My girlfriend is currently undertaking her bike training, and is due to take the Mod1 shortly. She has however found her first bike and is in the process of buying it.

The bike is from a dealer, and is currently not taxed but is being taxed as part of the sale. For them to tax it however they need a valid insurance document with her name on it as she will be the registered keeper.

As she has a provisional licence only, will she be able to take out a policy on her own on the bike which will cover it till she passes? I presume the price of the policy will be higher on a provisional but will drop once she calls them upon passing the MOD2?

The other option would be for me to insure it under my own name with her as a named rider with provisional status. Does anyone have any experience of doing it this way, as then it would be my own policy and I would take the NCB. Can you hand over a policy to other people for example?

She should be able to take the insurance without a full licence but it will cost the earth. Once she has licence the changes can be made but there are costs involved for changing the policy, admin charges, etc.

It is worth investigating but the cheapest way would be for you to have the bike in your name, the insurance inyours to with her as a named rider. Once she has passed you can change the V5C to her name and cancel the insurance and start from scratch again.

Yo will not be able to transfer policies and NCB will be lost if she claims on your policy.

Hope this helps.

I'm sure I read somewhere about an insurance company specifically for learner riders/drivers that covers you until your test is passed - could be worth a google search for them maybe?

All sorted now. Dealer is taxing it for us, I am riding it back on my insurance and we are going to insure it as "laid up" for a couple of months to cover till after the test is done and dusted.

Cheers for the help guys!

Just in case you did not know (lots of people dont) if you are intending to ride it third party on your insurance DONT!!!!! you wont be covered. To use any vehicle in this way requires an insurance policy for that vehicle fistly. If you are insuring the bike on your existing policy then thats fine.

Are you adding it as a bike on your insurance policy or just riding it back with third party cover as you can ride any bike on your policy? If its the later you'll need to insure the bike to do that or you wont be covered.

get a temporary policy for 24 hrs from someone like insure and go, specialist short term insurers are out there, or borrow the dealers trade plates for the trip home

Abigail won't be able to get insurance until she has a date for her mod2.
I tried to get my Diversion insured so it could be delivered to my home so it would be ready for me to ride once I'd passed my mod2.
I was told that they would only consider insurance once I had a mod2 date.
The only option is to try and get it insured under her home insurance, (costly!) or for you to add it as a second bike so you can ride it.
Mind it might well be worth talking to the insurance company as it was 3 years ago and they might have changed their policy.

Dave, if you just want to get it home, the easiest thing to do is borrow or rent a trailer or van for the day - that way it won't need taxing or insuring to be ridden, and your insurance won't cover you to ride it if it isn't comprehensively insured in its own right already (as alluded to in a previous reply).

I agree but whatever you do don't let it out of your site.

Someone I know did this when they bought a new bike for the same reasons. They travelled quite a way and decided to stop for a few minutes in a service station on the way home. They parked in full view of the window by the main building and by the time they'd left the car and trailer and got inside some low life had stolen the bike and trailer.

The Police were fairly certain they'd been followed from the dealers and never caught them and they had no insurance to claim on :'(

weird

Not so weird...

You have been lucky as this is a very grey area for dealers and tax offices... I sell over 300 used bikes a year and the ones which need taxing generally cant be taxed on the traders policy anymore.

This prevents riders not having insurance.. :) The tax office will now generally ask for ID, Check the V5 and also the insurance is in the same name..

People were buying bikes which had just been taxed and then riding for a year without insurance...

DVLA dont however state this rule... Hence GREY area... :)

Weird = The fact people would ride the roads without insurance.... 8-)

A valid point on the insurance side of things. Something I had completely overlooked.

Van hire it is then, costs as much to rent a van as the train was going to cost for me to get down there and collect it anyway. Now to find a rental company with some strapping and a ramp for the back to get the thing in and out with!

Sorry to butt in,
Im curious,
does bike insurance not work like car insurance then when you can drive other cars as your policy covers you with the owners permission?

Or are you saying it only covers for 3rd party and not theft or anything that happens to the bike if you were riding it?

If your licence/insurance allows it, you can drive another owners car/bike and have third party cover, provided that vehicle already has an appropriate insurance policy covering it in the owners name. If not, then your policy won't allow you to drive/ride it.

Dave, you might want to look at getting it added to your insurance anyway. if it's taxed, the DVLA require that it is also insured, and I don't know if 'laid up' cover counts. The only other option is to SORN it as soon as you get it home and cash in the tax the dealer put on it.

The bike can only be insured by its owner so the V5 has to be in the insured's name.

Are you sure?

What about leased cars? I've insured a few leased cars in the past which being leased haven't belonged to me. Its a bit more hassle than 'normal' but you can do it. I would imagine bikes are no different but dont know for sure.

Only from the point of view that I tried to insure my daughters car and was told it's not allowed to insure someone elses vehicle. However, I can't say for sure so best thing I guess is ring around a few insurers.

Definitely.

I know it was quite a hassle to get insurance on my last leased car and some insurers didn't want to know.

Yup insuring vehicles owned by other people is a real pain, used to have a nightmare with leased cars :/ our chaps at work insure themselves on our company cars too and have to choose insurers carefully
