It seems our glorious leaders in govt are considering applying current car VED taxation to motorcycles as they now have "figures"
unless they are going to apply a completely different set of values to bike emissions (which would be discriminatory - but then when did that stop them) they may end up shooting themselves in the foot

at the mo my bike costs me over 90 quid to tax as they charge by cc but if they apply the car based VED it will be exempt as most bikes would be i imagine
i cant get an official figure but found this for mine

Hmm, interesting. We don't pay anything for our Nissan car but pay plenty for the bikes
We could learn a lot from crayons; some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, while others bright, some have weird names, but they all have learned to live together in the same box.”

It would apply to new bikes after introduction
VED changes are never applied retrospectively. I would have thought bikes will cost more per whatever measure than cars as cars can split that pollution between 4 or 5 people sharing.

You say that Chris and that is normally the case I agree but this paragraph is worrying -"
"The other issue is bikes that do not have stated CO2 emissions from the manufacturers because they’re old enough that it wasn’t recorded.

In that case, the bikes are likely be to placed in bands based on their engine size, which could see large displacement older models (some BMWs and Harleys for instance) with exorbitant year taxes."

not much change in the way it is now at first glance but the undertone to me is that the rates per cc are going to rocket

Admittedly nothing is concrete yet but I can feel a mugging coming on, looks like a demo outside parliament is due

Read the document the article linked too and this was a bit

    7. Are you aware of any unintentional perverse environmental incentives that
have developed over time relating to VED on vehicles first registered prior to April
2017? Do you think government should take any action relating to this?

    MAG are looking into this too;

MAG prepares to engage on Vehicle Excise Duty plans

News from the Motorcycle Action Group (MAG)
MAG prepares to engage on Vehicle Excise Duty plans

The Motorcycle Action Group, the UK’s leading riders rights
organisation, has stated that it will be ensuring the voice of riders is
fully heard by the Treasury as it considers plans for a major overhaul
    of Vehicle Excise Duty.

On 11th March, HM Treasury fulfilled the Government commitment to
publish a call for evidence seeking views on moving towards a more
dynamic system which recognises smaller differences in carbon dioxide
    (CO2) emissions.

This call for evidence seeks views on how the Government can use VED to
further encourage the uptake of zero and ultra-low emissions cars, and
reduce overall emissions from road transport, to both help meet its
legally binding climate change targets and improve air quality. It also
seeks views on the VED treatment of motorcycles.

MAG’s Director of Communications & Public Affairs, Lembit Opik,
commented “We are already seeking one-to-one meetings with ministers and
senior officials at the Treasury to discuss the published plans. We
feel that the case for motorcycles is very different to that for
four-wheeled vehicles and thus needs very careful consideration. A
    two-way conversation is vital.”

    Colin Brown, Director of Campaigns & Political Engagement for MAG, said;
“The current VED system is both confusing and lacking in balance. We
look forward to the opportunity to engage with policy makers in a
cooperative and productive manner. I believe that there is a potential
solution that can be both elegant in its simplicity and take into
account a wide range of issues in a fair, equitable manner. We will
naturally respond in writing, but having a detailed discussion of our
ideas will bring a better result. We will discuss our ideas at our
forthcoming National Committee meeting and urge members to get in touch
with their regional representatives with any thoughts, ideas and opinions”

The full details of the call for evidence can be found at
