Welding

Iv got an old Kawasaki gt550 that's seen better days but has a years mot and iv decided to have a chop and play around and see what I end up with. There's a couple of bits that need welding and rather than get it done elsewhere like iv done in the past I'm thinking of buying a cheapie arc welder and attempting it myself.

Now the question is how hard is it to arc weld and is a total novice like me (never touched a welder before) likely to be able to teach himself how to weld with only youtube to help.
Or am I going to
A) waste my money?
B) kill myself with the power of elektrickery?

only my thoughts but:

probably a yes to parts A+B.

if you have never welded before it will turn out like a dogs dinner and the welds will never pass inspection for MOT's etc and will in all likelyhood be dangerous, ie, come apart at the first bump in the road.
which could be quite interesting if were to be say, headstock to frame

money would be better spent on having the welding done professionally

As it happens I got speaking to a bloke that lives just behind me who it turns out does mobile welding and he's agreed to teach me the basics for beer money so that's a bonus .
