Been trucking a few years, and the thumb down signal, is a common one for boys in blue or something bad ahead ..
The other one is the finger pointing at you with a thumb raised. Like a gun. Radar trap
What's the one with the middle finger pointing in the air and the other fingers down?
Someone told me that was "the birdie".
Does that mean they want me to fly like the wind?

Explains the odd looks or waves back I sometimes get.
It's wise to remember that warning other road users of a speed trap is an offence.

What exactly did you think people were doing then?
I have only seen it once in 35 years of riding and I thought it was a comment on my riding skills. That was last year and from a member of this forum when I was um overtaking the group in a brisk manner. Now I'm thinking it must be because I ride BMW's and as we know, no one waves or makes any signals at us!
I've only ever had the experience of the palm down signal usually with the flashing of lights which is what I do.
