I know it's been mentioned already, but it could easily be the side stand or clutch switch. I'm no mechanic or sparky but, as I undersatnd it, if either are broken and cutting the power, pulling the clutch or upping the stand will make no difference? Apologies if I'm talking nonsense!

Personally I would get the Reg/rec checked.
Sounds like it could be a dicky starter switch. Had this on the GS, exactly the same symptoms.
no expert but i'd go with regulator/rectifier... CBF's are known for this, know that from experience, have heard of similar from other handas too. Maybe try looking on the hornet forum to see if anyone else has had similar problems.

Try the kill and starter switch a few times.. They can get stuck. Just had it on the SP.

Silly question but you have checked the terminal connections are tight?
