For those with video cameras what software are you using for editing?

I'd like to find something really simple to use.

I cant get Windows Moviemaker to work on my PC - I get an error message about my video card

    Thanks

It depends what you want to do. I really only need two basic functions, cut and splice. After recording a load of footage, I want to cut out the good bits and then sticth them together. I use two freeware programes for this which are both very easy to use.

    Cutting
    Free Video Cutter http://www.freevideocutter.com/
Watch video and note down time for start of cut and end of cut
Open free video cutter and open file that you want to cut
enter start time and end times for cut
enter name for cut video or leave the default
    click start
If you want more than one cut from the video repeat the above process as many times as you like making sure you use different names for each cut

    Splicing
    Free Video Joiner http://www.freevideojoiner.com/
Select the files you want to join together
Change the order if they are not in the order you want
Select the file type you want to output
    Click join

Here is a sample. I cut the footage from several files and joined them into one

I was going to say moviemaker for its simplicity then read the last sentence!

What is the actual error? I had to disable virtu MVP with mine as that caused an error for moviemaker (along with errors in many other things).

I get an error message as soon as I click to open it which says 'Windows Movie Maker cannot start because your video card does not support the required level of hardware acceleration or hardware acceleration is not availiable'

I've tried updating my graphics card driver but other than that I think its beyond my IT capabilities.

Without knowing more I'd guess your card (or onboard) is pretty old the only GPU hardware requirement is to support DX9.

You can check by doing this

To open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool in Windows 7, click the Start button, type dxdiag in the search box, and then, in the list of results, click dxdiag. Click the Display tab, and then look at the value for DDI Version.

It should run moviemaker then. Do you have the other things it needs installed? Off the top of my head media player and photo gallery.
