ok this has got me stumped when the engine is cold on my 1991 gsxf750 it will run at idle ok but when hot it has a intermitant fault
most of the time it will drop onto idle speed when I pull up at a junction
but about 3 times out of ten it will sit at 2500rpm when I pull up unless I try to stall the engine and then the revs will drop to tickover engine runs fine the rest of thje tme

sounds like a sticky pilot valve or idle jet. Make sure the throttle cable is not snagging.

    try this.

Sounds like a cable problem to me.
Check your throttle cables for tensions.
Does the bike have a dual cable for acceleration and return?
Have the original cables ever been replaced? 1991?

As above. Check cables for kinks, might be worth giving them a good oiling and cleaning your carbs wouldnt go amiss.
When it's your time to go it's your time, so don't let it catch you.
