Have the double solid white lines on our country roads been breeding or something?

We took advantage of the fabulous weather this afternoon and went for a bimble down to Cheddar Gorge - It was one of my favourite routes last year but today was our first trip there this year and we noticed a few changes along our route, namely the addition of double solid white lines just about everywhere, miles of them.....

Why have they been added? This world had gone crazy! :-(

I've noticed them popping up in places they shouldn't be.
The roads are very dangerous, you must slow down and not overtake....

If you wear a heavily tinted visor white lines dont exist.... only joking of course. But yes i would agree, I ride those roads on a regular basis (work) and they have been adding and extending solid lines for the last 4 months really. I suspect it is because of doddery old fools pulling out of the lanes without looking cutting every tom dick and harry up resulting in smashes.... Just a guess.
