Fork seal maintenance

I need to/take my bike somewhere, for the front forks. My right fork I think is leaking oil slightly. So from what I can tell its best to do both rather than just one.

What do I need to do the job, any specific tools?
Measuring jug and fork oil
new fork seals?


I have a yamaha thundercat.

to do it yourself you'll need :

front headstock stand or alternative method of supporting front of bike
big spanner or socket to suit top nut on fork leg, front spindle bolt
fork spring compressor *
allen key to suit bottom damper bolt, i prefer 3/8 socket fitting type to torque but need to be longer style
fork seal driver or diy alternative
something to measure the fork oil level
Big allen key for trple tree top bolt
fine wet and dry to attend to any blisters in fork leg chrome
clean place to work


some of above may not be required depending on the machine

its possible that the inner & outer bushes and dust seals might warrant replacing too.

I would suggest getting your hands on the Haynes manual, reading over the sections involved then deciding if you want to go for it yourself.

At a push it's probably the right time to inspect and re grease the headstock bearings as you'd be almost all the way there.

A thought - if you're not too keen on DIY but want to keep the cost down its generally a lot cheaper if you just take in the forks to a garage.

I think the last ones I had done on a CBR1000 were about £80.
