I completely agree with all of the above.

    Loony Lefty/Socialist view:

Society had failed this man, he acted this way as society had not supported his addiction or unemployment. He should not have served a custodial sentence, he needed a cuddle and rehabilitation. It is everyone elses fault his relationship with the baby did not become positive. Restorative Approaches will help him to become a positive and useful member of society. We think he should be compensated and given a new identity, a house and all the benefits he needs.

Lawyer's view; the rights of my client were abused, "where's that copy of ECHR?"

Serious crimes like this, with the level of suffering involved and weak crappy sentencing is a complete, utter joke and very indictative of our ballsed up country.

Equally we see vulnerable women go in and out of prison for a few weeks at time just for nicking a packet of fags - I know one women who went in and out for menial shop-lifting (I know it's still not right) 23 times before someone thought - 'I wonder if we could actually support / help this woman instead'!! And strangely enough, when she got some support, she stopped shop-lifting!

The balance is so wrong >

Well, it's only going to get worse (or better - it will certanly be cheaper...) under current proposals, the cours will be less used in favor of the Magistrates. Legal aid will be axed, to be replaced with mediation... let these people talk it out.... and socal services reduced.

This was not the first case of it's kind, and it's sure as hell jot going to be the last the way the LibCons are going!

Pilninggas, this man’s actions sicken me to the pit of my stomach and as a true socialist I believe he should have remained incarcerated until the day he died.

I don’t wish to turn this thread in to a political debate but, I feel compelled to remind you that this farce of so called justice occurred on a right-wing capitalist regime’s watch.
