Kids of today have no idea.
Anyone that can afford to own a mobile phone today has no right to claim "Poverty"

This report is basically saying that 1 in 4 children will be chavs by 2020. Seems like it already. If you want proof, take a walk outside.

A definition of poverty commonly used by one Professor Peter Townsend who was the Professor of International Social Policy at the London School of Economics.

Poverty - Individuals, families and groups in the population can be said to be in poverty when they lack the resources to obtain the types of diet, participate in the activities, and have the living conditions and amenities which are customary, or are at least widely encouraged and approved, in the societies in which they belong.

Surely the last bit cant be true. I gues you caould say it is widely encouraged/approved/customary within our society to have mobile phones, digital TV service, broadband, TVs in two or more room in a house, games consoles, laptop/pc or even both, a car - maybe two, an en-suite to your master bedroom, a holiday...... where do you draw the line? None of the above are a necessity and nore is it your right to own. If you can afford to have the above you surely cant be poverty stricken. according to the statement above you can be > > >

What sort of society do we live in that poverty is gauged by whether or not you have a mobile phone etc rather than food and somewhere to live???

Life is not about owning things.

    Crazy place

I thought the welfare state was set up as a safetynet, to help people in financial or social difficulties through no fault of their own.
I personally totally agree we should help people in genuine need, but not to subsidise the idle and feckless, who treat the social security system as a life choice.

To put the cat amoung the pigeons...

In the town where i work, a local lady walked into the council saying that she couldn't cope with her kids.
The long story broken down is that (wait for it)
The Council paid to have her kids "looked after" for a couple of weeks for her. They then paid for a holiday for her for a week in the sun. As she was alone, they also paid 50% toward her best friend going with her to keep her company.... LOL Winner!

    It's even worst in America

More than 6 million Americans are set to lose federal unemployment benefits in 2012, with 1.8 million running out in January alone, according to new figures from the National Employment Law Project.

The problem is that the people who need it most don't know or are unable to access the benifits that they're entitled to.
Meanwhile there are people who are working the system for all it's worth.
It's exactly like "the rich are getting richer, and the poor are getting poorer" except it's "the vunerable are getting more vunerable and the srcoungers are getting more.....scroungy?" Whatever, you know what i'm getting at.
Coruption isn't just confined to the higher echilons of society.
