    There are a few about
2T theres the Yamaha DT 125,s all years.4T yammys are the Serrow, and TTR250 and older XT 250's
Kawasaki KMX 125's 1988-2001 spares are plenty full on these.
KMX 200 2T rarer than the KMX 125 but with more torque and most parts from a KMX 125 will fit.4T are KLX models
    2T Suzuki PE 125's 175 etc 4T DR 125 and 200
4T Honda XL 125,185,200,250 twin shock good torque on engine.
4T Honda XR 125,200 250 are the Enduro versions.
most cheapish trail bikes are from about 1985 onwards some spares are easier to get than others aswell.
The Honda XL camshafts ran in the heads and not in bearings so were liable to wear the cylinder head if oil changes were not kept to schedule.

how experienced off road are you? how tall?
there are shorter bikes like the serow, and Gas Gas Pampera, and there are full on Enduro bikes.

what kind of budget, and how serious do you want to be.??.....
fun can be had on a budget, i once did a whole winter on a DT125lc, that cost me £80 (altho i did a fair bit of work on it), but now run a WRF250...

one last hint, dont buy a 4 stroke that smokes, and dont buy a 2 stroke if it doesnt!!! :-)

if i had to pick a cheapish bike for a newbie, id recommend a KMX125, the DT has better suspension but a PANTS engine, and wont be as cheap as a KMX year for year.......remove the washer from an inch inside the front pipe on the KMX and youll have a good little lightweight winter green laner.

shame im "Physically unable to ride offroad" at the mo, as i could have shown you salisbury plain! if youve got a bike in about three months from now, give me a shout......

    cheers.

Or there might be a very tidy KL250 Super Sherpa (as seen recently in the Pyrenees...) up for sale soon - as low as a Serow, very similar really...

If you're 6ft tall you needn't worry about a low seat height, pretty much any dirt bike would do...

for that money youre gonna get a pretty ropey 4 stroker, but would find a pretty good 2 stroker with a bit of searching......
try CRM250 on eeeebay, they hold there money but are good kit, and pretty easy to work on, think ive got a workshop manual somewhere from the last engine build i did on a mark 2.
theres a suzuki RMX on eeeebay at the mo for 995, good bikes, bit heavy tho, and some had powervalve problems, dont buy it if it rattles.....
try looking for a honda xr250 you may find something for that kinda money, theyre good and reliable, dont buy one if it ticks, as it has a very complex valve train, which is expensive to replace, good bikes tho.

dont buy a converted motocross bike, it will be PANTS to ride, and unreliable, dont be tempted by a cheap one.......

another thing if youre worried about it is complete legality, there are some models that are listed on the logbook as Enduro Use Only and not PLG/Motorcycle......these models havent had an SVA (single vehihcle Approval"test and wont stand up in court........

reckon youll have good fun on an £800-1000 bike, theres some good ones out there, happy hunting :-)

P.s. im doing my leg exercises like a good boy and will be back on the WR soon, and will arrange a trip round salisbury plain for all those interested. :-)
