    I'd say it's the safety pin from the bottom of a trip flare.

    After you fit the trip flare to the stake, you cock the striker, attach the trip wire and then remove the pin before you walk away. The pin stops the striker firing the flare while you're connecting the trip wire

    you can find lots of ordnance on the plain (if you look in the right places ;-) )....
    i have photos.....
