that tells when you're are in top gear???
I don't care about knowing which gear I'm in except top. Surely bike manufactures could do that?
I can't be the only one that has to check for another gear even though I've already looked at my revs and speedo?
Life would be so much nicer if there was a little light on my dash that told me I'm in top :)

some do have a gear indicator but there are times i do search for another gear when it's already in 5th (top)
Yea I know some bikes do and you can even buy an add on something that tells you what gear you're in but who cares if they are in 2nd 3rd 4th? Top gear is the only one you need to know about :P :)

Yep the amount of times I have gone to change gear and I am already in top is unbelievable.
don't need a 6th :) the other five hold enough pull for me...seriously if you cane it, it pulls like a train in any gear and any rev. have pulled away in 4th before ;D

I have gear indicators on both bikes - never use them. You should be in the correct gear in terms of engine load and conditions - the only way of knowing that is feel and experience for the road conditions and your speed. I'm not about to take my eyes off the road to see what gear I'm in either ::)
The manufacturers who fit them then try and get clever and fit loads of safety features so you can't start the bike unless its in neutral etc., and these are often linked to the light not the gearbox. This is a right royal pain when the indicator fails as the bike just won't start regardless even if you're in neutral and the clutch switch is also activated.
Its only slighty useful to show when you're in neutral as that prevents the need to slip the clutch when stationary but other than that they're of little use.

This is why both my cars are automatics, it has **** all to do with me being a lazy twot and can't be arsed stick shifting.

Agreed, but as Don found out at Snetterton, a wrong (or no gear) can have big consequences on a tight bend on track. In the heat (and panic) there, knowing that I can glance down to confirm I've just cocked up my gear change is good :-)
It may be with your and Scotty's long experience on bikes it would be never needed (and I don't need it on my road bike) but being newish on track, I'll take whatever help I can get to both keep me safe and get me round quicker (mainly the latter to be honest) :D

Don't feel the need to have a gear indicator, you instinctly know what gear your in. Cars tend to have engraved on the gear knob, bet you don't look at it went changing.
Tip given to me by instructor. If your not sure what gear your in, then go up through the gear box to top then move back down through the gears until you reach desired gear.
I found a gear indicator useful when I was getting used to a new bike, now I mainly use mine to check if I am in neutral.
But I'd rather have a petrol gauge!!!!! I can't remember to set the trip. Bad memory ..... must be because I am an old woman Scotty ;D ;D
