Sweet, will have to try again this year, I had one booked last year but had to come off it as something quite important cropped up.

Well worth doing. Whether you are getting back into biking, just passed or just need a refresher in general.

Hi Ducatista any idea when the venues will be known.

Ducatista

Sorry don't know, but it will have to be in time for people to book the April one.
Last years was at Urchfont Manor near Devizes and I did one in 2005 at Devizes, so I expect they will continue to try to get somewhere in the middle of the county.

I have just heard that the regional Bike safe event will take place at Castle Coombe on 5th June.
Assesesed rides (fee £25) will be followed by time on the track.
Sorry - I don't know any details of how to book at the moment, but with track time for included, this has got to be popular.

Just to be clear, the track bit is ONLY on June 5th and not the other dates.

No doubt there will requirements to meet, such as full one piece leathers or 2 piece with a zip right round (not just across the back).
There are also quite strict noise requirements at Castle Coombe, but all that should be made clear beforehand.

I'm sure none of us needs telling, but just in case anyone forgets.

Castle Coombe sounds good. Def need to brush up on cornering. I keep feeling the need to slow before bends. :-[

Just found this in my Riders newsletter.
"Owners turning up on the day will have the option to pay £25 for a police escorted assesment with a track session included in this fee too".

I will remove the word "free" from my previous post which was an assumption on my part (sorry).

Still very good value IMO because the guys doing it are very experienced.

Here's a link to the Wiltshire Police page.

http://www.bikesafe.co.uk/Bikesafe/Bikesafe2000/england/wiltshire/wiltshirepolice.html

On the "normal" bike safe days it a combination of some "classroom" stuff and an assesed ride with the police (advanced riders).
It's 9:00 - 16:00 and is usually in/near Devizes.
Previously there has been a refundable £10 fee.
Your cheque is destroyed if you turn up (this is just to stop people not informing Colin if they can't make it and wasting a place).

I think most people go along for the assesed ride, but the classroom stuff isn't boring, with videos etc.

For the assesed rides you normally go out in groups and they try to put you together with people with similar bikes/experience.
Normally its's two or three of you and you take it in turns to ride in front/behind the police rider.
When you are in front, they are assesing you.
When you are behind you can watch.
When you get back you have a detailed debrief about the things you did well and where you might be able to improve.

The regional event is slightly different.
There will be assesed rides and also track sessions (for £25 fee).
I suspect it's not about teaching you to race, but letting you practice your cornering and braking in a safe environment (no oncoming traffic).
They will again instruct/follow and debrief you.

The police will check you bike beforehand and if it's not legal or safe then they won't take you out.
There are normally extra requirements on the track e.g. full set of leathers and back protectors, but that information would be supplied beforehand.

The police riders are police advanced riders, so the basic police test is not enough.

The day is very worthwhile, whichever you pick.

I can imagine it being a good day

As for the police advanced bike course compared to the standard course......the cones are a little harder and the riding a little faster but thats it really.

I often read articles on police advanced riders but a lot of forces do the advanced bike course on the BMW R1200RT which is a bike thats also used for the standard course and i know those bikes are only good for around 135mph kitted.

I did a day out woth the Met a few years ago was a good day

Is the track option really for those who want to brush up their racing skills or want to blast around the circuit quickly.

I wouldnt miind doing it so I could practice my cornering but wouldnt want to hold everyone up.

Thanks for that.
Wheres Odiham?
Problem I got with cornering is that I tend to slow down too much as I am not that confident in leaning the bike over very much.
cheers

No worries mate i can basically teach u the system that 'Bikesafe' are taught in training.

I have done the standard and advanced courses and they really helped me with my road riding and corners just by sorting out speed and positioning for the corner and learning how to read the bend.

I am off most weekends and occasionally get out during week when kids are at school

You will find Bikesafe really helpful Chris after your lengthy absence from 2 wheels - enjoy the day! Even the 'classroom' stuff is really interesting. I was about to go the wrong way at a roundabout and had a quick blast of the siren which was not a sound I want to hear anytime soon again!! ;D

Yes the venues are arranged.
I am afraid they cannot be given out to the general public (not sure why, maybe they think lots of people will turn up on spec).

If you want to know then send me a pm, but I don't think any of the venues will be prohibitive for anyone.

Ducatista

Yes it will get booked up, so if you want to go then sign up.
I'm sure that if you need to cancel and give adequate notice then Colin will rip up your £10 cheque.
It's only kept for people who don't bother giving notice and selfishly take a place from someone else.

If you can't go (maybe illness on the day) then please do let Colin know. There are somtimes reserve lists of people waiting, so it's possible someone elee may be able to take the place even on the day.

They aren't collecting cheques this year apparently, Rob just signed up online and got his confirmation from Colin.
