The cub has died....

Stranded me in the middle of Bath at 7:30 this morning, AA phoned the AA, who sent a car recovery van... duh! :-? and am now waiting for the flatbed to appear at 11:30..... great!

The cause, a loss of power and a loud knocking sound.... sounds like big end to me.... great!

Joys of british bikes.

Sorry to hear that Jon :( Surely you could have slung it in the back of the recovery van though? :P

I have the feeling I may be starting the Bugger #3 thread soon, as the CG has developed a knock too....bad times.

Took the sump plug out last night....

I don't remember that white metal there when I took it out last.... :-? :-?

Alas, this is a known weak spot on the Cub engine, and the only bearing I didn't replace when I last stripped the engine.

It will live again, but probably not for a few months. Am going to get the Sv back on the road first and strip the engine to find the full extent of the damage.

Argh, not the bearing! A frequent cause of angst amongst cub owners. You need to speak to a Pete in Bath Classic who has done a lot of work on his cub over the years and gives his mates a run for their money!

ARRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!

Stripped the top end down last night.... and found this:

http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i36/teleSV650/P1050681.jpg

The cause appears to be a "slightly" loose scraper ring ring.... oh matron!

http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i36/teleSV650/P1050682.jpg

If you see, the bottom ring is smaller than the groove it sits in. It should be a good fit! The groove in the piston hasn't got any wider so the wrong ring was fitted.

How it didn't smoke is a mystery as that ring is ment to keep the oil out of the combustion chamber. The bore is luckily unharmed. My timely decision to stop was correct!

However am cursing that I didn't notice this on the last engine strip and that i now have to strip the engine again to remove every last bit of metal....

All new bits have arrived, all cases are cleaned and ready, just a bit of work to do on one half of the crankcase and then re-assemble, inject fluids, test run and finish off. All before 26th... 17days and counting.

Ok, progress.... Engine is now re-built, in the bike, fluids are in, electrics are connected, just needs timing and tidying before attempting to start it.

All I know need is for it to stop raining!!

11 days and counting. :o

Bugger #3

Decided as yesterday evening was so good, I'd crack on with the bike. Got it together, timed and primed.

And it fired 2nd kick!!! :o

And thats where the problems started.... the engine is emitting a very loud rattle, took the head off, nothing, took the dizzy out, nothing. So have to take it apart again...... AR5E!! >:(

10 days and counting....

I'm very envious of your engine building skills, it's something I've never attempted. Hope you get it all sorted out :)

Found the problem!!!

A crack in the spring holding the points. Must have been causing erratic firing. Put new points in and no knocking!!!

Blooming thing. Cheap Chinese copy points..... >:(

Just need it to stop raining..... ::)

7 days and counting...

BUGGER!!!!

Had a couple of errands to run yesterday.... nothing major, so an ideal excuse to run the cub....

... got to Keevel and the bugger seized!!!! AR5E!!! Unsiezed virtually immediatly, but wouldn't re-start.... so a nice push for me!! Big thanks to all those who offerd help btw. :)

Got home, re-started... and no oil flow!!!! suspect oil pump failure.

Am NOT happy... >:(

HETHAN!!!!! Put WHAT in the bike.... J a p a n e s e... wash your mouth out!!!!! :o

Urrrrghhhh.... have come over faint at the thought. Prehaps Loops wants the engine for her CG??

Anyhow,

Took the oil pump out cleaned it out and re-assembled. Started the bike up and oil slowly returned to the bike!!!!

Managed a ride today.... very steady to say the least!! But no issues. Suspect the seizure was the new piston binding in the bore. Need to run it in at a much slower pace.

2 days and counting...... :-/
